Hopefully this won't mean anything for NZ, but around 7.30pm tonight NZ Time an 8.5 Quake has been recorded off Chile, the Geonet website here is showing the quake on a lot of the measuring equipment in NZ.
No Tsunami warning for New Zealand yet but I know we've been hit by a wave from that area before

I'm keeping an eye on the Pacific Tsunami Warning centre's website, warnings slowly being extended out
Nothing on NZ as yet but I would not be surprised if they do place our east-coast on a watch

NZ Civil Defense just got a warning out too:

00:12HRSNZDT 28 February 2010
The magnitude of the Chile quake has been confirmed as 8.8. A local tsunami has been confirmed with the highest recorded wave measuring 2.2m.
The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) and GNS science advisors have been closely monitoring the situation following the above quake to assess any potential tsunami threat to NZ. Based on current information MCDEM has issued a National Warning:Tsunami Threat to NZ. There is a possible marine threat along the East coast of the North Island and South Island and Chatham Island at level 1 (0.2 to 1 metre) .The earliest possible arrival times for NZ are 07:05 on Sunday 28 Feb at Chatham Island

Yes but it won't stop the headless chickens in the NZ news media  making a 10 meter wave out of it..
