i recently bought a police scanner from dick smith for $299
i got all the frequencies tuned in for most towns but when i was in waverely i couldnt get any police from the wanganui region
i was just wondering if anyone knew what frequency they use in waverely?

Scanners have never been illegal, but acting or passing on any information is.

The new nationwide APCO P25 network is in the process of being rolled out which weans you will no longer be able to listen to any emergency services.

At the moment only Wellington is digitally encrypted. Auckland and ChCh are next so you should still be able to listen to all except Wellington.

As mentioned only illegal to act on the information not to listen.

No. He could only seize it if he arresting you and it's evidence of a crime for which he's arresting you.

But he will probably try to trick you into admitting to acting on the information you hear on it so as usual, dont answer their questions beyond name/address/occupation.

Yeah whatever! The evidence required to prove the charge beyond reasonable doubt wouldn't be worth the effort involved, especially if it's just a routine traffic stop and there's nothing else about the situation to indicate the scanner is being used for any other purpose other than just wanting to listen in.

I have seen the results of giving "harmless" info to the police twice now, and you see it all the time on those shows where they video the cops.

You may think you are immune, but when they turn a "so you are just driving around tonight" question into a lets cause problems becuase of the anti boy racer laws you will soon learn to shut up when dealing with the traffic gestapo.

P25 scanners are pretty common. These will pick up P25 channels that don't use encrypon.

The NZ police are using encryption on top however so you can't listen in. There had been speculationd a year or so ago that both fire and ambulance would not be using encryption however I believe both now will be.

I wonder if it will be the same encryption key? I know i was in a situation a while ago where I had a scanner (FPA) and i was letting the cop who was running the road block know what was going on as he only got police channels lol.

(during the newlands scrub fire a few years back)

but i'd guess there would be limited situation where you'd want cross service availability and I suppose the cops can still switch to the Fire or Ambulance channels in that situation.

Encryption keys are updated regularly. I'm not sure if Tait have OTA rekeying working yet, there were issues originally and radios had to be physically reloaded with a new key.

Liason channels could easily be non encrypted if interagency communication was required between different agencies, this is what has happened in the past.
