What are peoples thoughts on this TV?

I want to upgrade our current 40 inch LCD to a 55inch LCD... i have shocking eyes and want to be able to watch tv comfortably from the couch!!

Specs all seem pretty good, but the price seems really cheap.... what's the catch? Am i missing something here?

It does say "special order only" on their website - so I would guess you would have a hard time finding it instore at any NL.
Harvey Norman have it on their website. Maybe you can look at it there. But I see that the $200 off at NL finishes 18th May - If you found it at HN, then I would be very surprised if they didnt match the NL price.

If you live in Auckland have a look for the KDL55EX500 on pricespy.co.nz - there are other places that have it cheaper than NLs current 'special'.

To be honest these days its really hard to choose something like a TV. Half the time I research it on the internet - if there are enough reviews that are positive, and the price is good the trip to the store is pretty much just to arrange the purchase.

All i really wanna know is why is this Sony 55inch so cheap compared to other sony 55inchers that are twice, even three times the price? What makes this one so different?

related to how much black the LCD can produce - black appear not so black in this LCD compared to the expensive ones. also perhaps this cant do 200Hz motion blurring thing (turns everything smoother - such that it becomes like a cartoon). neither shouldnt be a problem for most people

Basically LCD's are at the bottom of the rung price wise...
But the performance is fine for most people.
There aren't many KDL55's around the place at the moment - try ringing around stores to see if you can track one down, then take a look.
Basically, it's 100Hz, full HD, the matt screen is great in brightly lit rooms.
The downsides, the black levels aren't as great for 'purists', but fine for most. Sony has moved back to 8 bit panels (not a downside really, as BluRay is 8 bit anyway) + the top of the bezel is a little distracting for me as it seems warped from certain angles.
Apart from that, it's not a bad set at all - heck the instructions can be accessed via the remote :-)

Did anyone end up buying this?
What are your thoughts?
Seriously considering, seems like a great price.
Just not sure if I need to upgrade from a Samsung 46" M8

I have seen this TV around quite a bit and it is very popular. Its an excellent price point and looks very pretty.

I'd keep my eye out for the new Samsung models as they have several very innovative features and are looking to undercut Sony.

Be careful though, 200MHz panels simply use more power and provide zero discernible picture difference. I have watched these panels since they were released and they are no different to their 100MHz counterparts.
