So I just purchased a digital camera from Ascent Technology Ltd for $633.50

It's a Sony DSC-TX7.

Sony sells the TX7 via their website and via their Sony Style retail stores for $779.95

My question is, how is this possible? You would think that buying directly from the manufacturer would cost less, right?

Or does it come down to profit margins?

It is profit margins - and most retailers will sell on their website with a bigger margin then others. It happens all the time, especially with electronics such as big screen TV's.

Its life.. and at the end of the day - you are still buying their product so they are still making a profit :) its a win-win :)

$779.95 would be the RRP that most retailerts like Sony (who aren't cheap) would sell it for.

Ascent just run on lower margins.

You could have saved yourself even more as well:

I've purchased a couple of items lately from them inclduing a sony camera and their service has been pretty good.

Manufacturers set the RRP. It would be VERY bad practice of them to then undercut all of the companies they supply to.

Ascent and others are etailers, no physical retail stores... no retail staff costs and overheads.
