Ok I have been selling some stuff on Trademe for a while now but am finding their success fees a bit rich.

Alternatives:
Ebay.co.nz
Sella.co.nz

Ok, I was having a look at ebay help pages to find their fees etc and the page I was looking at told me that the fees were $2.00 insertion fee and a success fee of 9% of the total. My maths isnt great but if I sold something worth $200 that would cost me $20? and the page told me that all fees were in US dollars!

Trademe's fees dont look so bad now.

I havent had a look at sella's charges yet.

I think that more people use Trademe than anything else. Would that be a correct assumption?

Does anyone else use one of the alternatives and if so, what are your sellthrough rates like?

Are there any other viable alternatives in NZ?

Thanks

Sella is free so fee wise its great.... but good luck in selling things.... I listed some items with them after they supposedly merged the Zillion system with their own. I had a total of 2 viewers on my items. On TradeMe Id have 100+ easy.

To be honest, I dont see advertising for Sella anywhere and noone ever mentions them.... if they marketed it better then maybe it might be different... but for now Im sticking with TradeMe....

EBay is fine if you have items that you know would sell better in an international market than local.

But this marketing would probably mean success fees etc to pay for it.

so you are saying that ebay is more directed at overseas people buying from NZ rather than local buyers?

Looks like it.  I just did a search  "Telecom XT" with zero results.. Other searches for stuff I've bought here on TM  list US only sellers..

www.zillion.co.nz and www.lixtor.co.nz and www.webuy.co.nz are all alternatives to trademe.co.nz

Zillion is about the only real alternative and tbh doesn't even come close to TradeMe.  Lixtor's site looks as awful as the name sounds - a real amateur effort.  webuy.co.nz?  Never heard of it, doesn't load on my machine. Even ebay.co.nz just takes you to the US site.

Love it or loathe it, we're stuck with trademe.

Perhaps there is an opening for some enterprising people?

Many tried, and many will try. They failed and will continue to fail. Going head on with Trade Me is not prudent.

All those alternatives, except for eBay, are really amateurish attempts of doing something Trade Me is doing really well.

Webuy is goneburgers, and Lixtor seem to be dodgy to me - their $10k prize has been on their site for months, surely it should've been drawn by now?

Well you have to ask yourself, with those nosebleed high success fees, how can they make a profit?? ;)  Tongue out

Trademe and Mightyape is the only online stores i need to grab everything im looking for. Going from computer stuff to clothes, hell brought me some good Levi jeans not long ago which are really impossible to get in a country town.

I mainly buy not sell so dont know what its like with fees etc on TM

When I heard the news Sella bought out Zillion, I thought it might finally be time to join.

I bid and won my first auction. Guy was local, listed phone number on description.
I promptly tried to contact, no response. Kept this up over a 1 month period, just kept ignoring me. Great start. Gave him negative feedback, I think the 45 day limit will go by before he can post retaliatory feedback, but Sella said they would remove it anyway if he manages to do it in time.

I listed my car on Sella last thursday, so its run 4 full days and has had 3 views! On TM it might be 100 views by now? To run it as an auction like I am, on Sella its free and no sale fees, on TM it costs $40 (?) plus another $40 (?) when sold. So I was hoping to sell on Sella to keep the price down for the buyer, but if nobody is looking, then it might never be sold.

Trademe has critical mass, tons of sellers tons of buyers.

Sella will always struggle, they can try and increase market share and raise awareness of their existence but it will take years and probably trademe screwing up and Sella doing something epic.

Your grandma has probably heard of Trademe, and hasn't heard of Sella.

When a site has made it to the verb stage, then it's successful - "I'll Google it", or "I'll wiki it" are successful. "I'll trademe it" is getting there as part of the general NZ lexicon. Even sounds reasonable. But "I'll sella it" ? nah - sounds like you are laying down some wine ... companies need to look forward to see what their site sounds like when it hits that critical mass and becomes verbalised ... sella hasn't really looked forward.
