Going to Los Angeles for a couple of weeks soon.

I would like to buy a prepaid sim while there, preferable with data too.

I've googled, and options seem to be Cingular (AT&T now), or T-Mobile.

But, their websites are too complex for me to work out.

Anyone had experience with purchasing prepaid sim's in Los Angeles ?

i purchased an AT&T SIM from eBay, turned up pretty quickly. 1 week after payment. Guess it depends when you leave.

OK might give it a try, not leaving for a little while.

I heard that AT&T doesn't offer prepaid data, although I don't know whether that's true or not. It'll pay to check.

When I went to the States in 2008, it cost me $10 for a prepaid SIM which included 10 minutes of call time. This was on T-Mobile. It looks like the basic "pay as you go" option hasn't changed since I went.
For standard "Pay as you Go", your top-ups give you "x minutes of call time" and texts cost 10c send/5c recieve.

I don't know if data is available on T-Mobile prepaid.

T-Mobile (I don't know about others) don't allow for anonymous purchase of prepaid SIM cards. You have to register for one.
