Store will be open mid September in the Meridian Mall, JB Hifi's first South Island store.  About 30 jobs will be created.

They are in the process of opening a store in Bayfair  (Mt Maunganui) also.

Yep, can confirm the Dunedin store. Not sure why they chose to go to Dunedin before Christchurch though :S

Economics. They will want a store that is going to make them money. If its in the wrong location, and the rent is too high, then they obviously will not make any, or enough, profit.

Obvious choice really, Dunedin is way better :)  and even Marbecks opened their first South Island store in Dunedin.

Or transferred from NL, B&B, HN and SCity.
Those other tech stores must be quaking if the effect on  them in other areas is anything to go by.

I think it's to do with the large student demographics (and their tendency to overspend).

They have one in Palmerston North too.

That won't be a particularly large store compared to some of the other players (Smiths / HNorman).
And I'm picking they won't be going overly high end (it's a mall store after all).
But they will no doubt sell a lot of games / consoles etc - and the likes of the games store in the Golden Centre may struggle. I don't know if it'll hurt Harvey Norman / Noel Leeming... more the smaller players who may already be close to the brink profit wise? It could actually stimulate the market at Bond & Bond across the road...

I do think staff will leave the likes of Noel Leeming / Powerstore etc to take up a lion share of the jobs. Of course, they typically move management etc from other JB stores.

Anyone know the opening date, according to the news article awhile ago, it was meant to be open September, but still not open.

Their website says...
"It will open on Friday 15th Oct 2010"

So there we go then.

Didn't see that on the website. Must be going blind haha. Am quite impressed with JB's. Some of their prices seem a bit higher, but not too bad.  The three times I went there since yesterday, it has been flat out.

With Powerstore's Garage Sale and the opening of JB Hifi... there would have been some bargains to find!
Was there a lot of advertising out there promoting the launch? Or was it all a little 'softly softly' until they get 100% sorted?

I didn't see any advertising promoting the launch, other than the spread in Fridays paper.
As for Powerstores garage sale, I had a quick glimpse at prices in todays paper and wasn't too impressed. They had a 1TB WD Elements external drive for $133. You can buy them at PBTech for around $109 - everyday price now.

That's not exactly a top price...
It's not really a place to buy hard drives / the latest tech though... Powerstore seems to be more of a Ma and Pa shop, especially when compared to JB / Harvey's.

Great news, if only Burger Fuel would make its way down to Dunedin as well.
