I'm trying to build this bench thing out of wood, just wondering which hardware shop/place is the best place to buy timber in Auckland from your experiance?

mitre 10, bunnings, hammer hardware, placemakers, or anywhere else?

I only need about 20M of 100x50 and some other small bits and pieces but I'm trying to save as much as I can hence why i'm DIYing it.

Thanks

Generally you will find it cheaper to purchase from Mitre 10 / Bunnings as they are more DIY orientated than the likes of carters/placemakers etc. Those places rely on the fact you get a trade discount, but you wont have an account so probably dearer!

If there is a local sawmill or timberyard, you might get something cheaper from them, depending on the quality of timber you are after. I am from Wellington, so cannot suggest anyone sorry.

you could try demolition supplies (http://www.demolition.co.nz/lk041004.htm) they sometimes are cheaper than new - but shop around, check prices at bunnings or mitre 10 mega first. they can sometimes source stuff cheaper.

Since it's only a workbench, you probably get a better price if you ask for seconds. It may have a few extra knots, or slightly warped, or a split. Builders supply yard like Carters, and the ones others have mentioned.
Even a subdivision that is being built - ask the builders for off-cuts. They usually have a wood offcuts sitting in piles waiting to be burnt / dumped.

If you're on the Shore (in Akl) you could go to Sanders...I found them to be uber-cheap when replacing broken fence plings...they were also able to cut everything exactly to size, with no questions at all.
