Have a parcel coming (hopefully) from USA by Priority Mail. USPS tracking info says...

Your item left the United States from FOREIGN CENTERJERSEY CITY NJ 099 at 8:15 AM on July 1, 2010.

Detailed Results:

Given that parcel left them on 2nd July our time, should I have expected to at least see it arrive in Customs by now? 7 days seems a long time to get from there to here!

I'm supposed to respect my elders, but it's getting harder and harder for me to find one now.

OK nearly got confused with UPS. It should take around 7-10 days I suppose. With mail service, you won't see as many tracking points as say, if it was sent via UPS or FedEx.

OK, last parcel was via UPS and I could track it all the way through, guess I have to be patient :-)

And from experience, once it arrives in Auckland it'll disappear off the face of the earth until it suddenly turns up at your door. Tracking seems to be hopeless within NZ.

Yeah, with the mail service, when it goes out of the sender's country, tracking is very limited. You will find perhaps that it arrives first, then the tracking page is updated a day later, hehe.

Good catch for younger players that one.

USPS = US Postal Services (NZ Equiv parcel post with your local posties) which can be 10-15.
UPS = Worldwide postal logistics (small parcel freighting)

As said, when USPS hit akl they are quazi-zapped. Custom'd if applicable and re-labelled with a NZ Post parcel post label (or Courierpost depending on service) for delivery and scanned (the NZ system doesn't recognise all foreign labels)

I have had some luck with parcelpost tracking of shipments from HK where they automatically register the change and you can lookup based on the original tracking number

http://www.nzpost.co.nz/Cultures/en-NZ/OnlineTools/Tracking/

Failing that the only sure fire way to tell is to wait, or contact the NZPost helpdesk and see if they have logged the transfer through customs yet and obtain the NZ scan ticket details.

Oblivian, tried that link and it located the item, told me was in transit to NZ. Guess its coming via Uzbekistan Donkey Mail :-)

Priority mail from US usually takes a week for me but that is from California.

It's probably on a donkey from NJ to California before they put it on a plane.

Don't forget that they had a holiday weekend that weekend so the donkey would have taken a few days off. :)

That happens with courier or mail within NZ anyway...

I got a parcel from Arizona last week.

Paid thursday, was sent friday, arrived the following wednesday.

However that was by USPS express, $44 USD, small, light printer sized box.

I analysed the times, and based on previous parcels, I believe at the point it says "arrived in NZ", it has in fact already been in the country a while and must be at customs prior to that message. Then it gets delivered by courier the following day.

Smaller parcels like bubble bags, by priority mail, for example sent on thursday, have generally arrived the following thursday. I got a torch from US by standard mail, it took 2 weeks and 2 days.
