Not sure what forum this is best it's here....

Does anyone have any experience with a working install of Zoneminder (Linux based security cam software)? Been messing with this for a couple of days and have come to the conclusion that it is the devil's software. Bajillion times more complicated than it needs to source gone wrong.....blah blah...

I have a working install on what USED to be a minimal Ubuntu 10 install with Fluxbox WM added.

Camera detection fine. Event logging etc fine, filters fine. Access through localhost webserver fine. Email events? Forget it. 2 days of trolling through various 'tutorials', none of which get me to a working setup to send emails via FTP the same. Archives are generated but just sit there going nowhere.

So, I am WAY beyond asking somebody to fix this mess. However I am keen to hear if anyone who DOES have it working, so I might suck your brains dry.

Alternatively, does anyone know of a good linux based alternative?

That's my findings of it too.

Would love to find something to replace the lousy crap that came with the DVR card - its stck in a 1024x768 user interface despite the resolution of the screen, and its remote access is about as predictable as a schizophrenic.

The email issue could be your ISP preventing you from accessing an external email server, Try using your ISPs email server.

could also be cert errors with gmail's smtp. Does zone minder even support tls on its smtp?

Yah it's the gmail authentication that's the issue (cert, tls, you name it, it's a problem). Zoneminder is not actually handling the mail, it's calling the default OS mail package to do it instead. I trieda few, some of them even store password in plain text.....

I've sorted the mail my going back to my ISP's account as suggested - they don't even need user name password(!).

FTP still has me. Might hazard their forums...
