I sat my practical full license test yesterday and was issued with a temporary driver license, which doesn't show my photo. It has my DOB & name though (i'm 19). If I were to try and get into a bar etc with this temporary license with my student ID aswell which has my photo and matches the name on the temporary license, so backs up the info on the temporary license, would they let me in??

I don't have a valid passport atm or an 18+ card.

Thanks

I think you're probably out of luck. I recently had to perform the ten-yearly renewal of my driver's licence and as I walked out of the AA office holding the temporary licence that they had given me I realised that I needed to buy some wine on the way over to my friend's place. No problem, I thought, since I'm nearly 30 anyway but the first bottle store simply refused to serve me. Fortunately I managed to get through the next one as they didn't request ID.

I don't think a student ID will help you as these probably don't have a standardised format and could easily be forged. The generally accepted forms seem to be driver's licence, 18+ card, or passport.

It must catch a lot of people out as a lot of people who drink or smoke wouldn't think to ensure that they have another form of photo ID before renewing their driver's licence. I certainly didn't.

I find it highly amusing that there is no standard for student IDs... our marketing team print out student IDs for our students and I queried them about it then and got told "no, every institution makes their own"

It's actually a very good question. A paper (temporary) drivers licence is a legal document - the problem is it doesn't have your photo which is what people are looking for with ID.

+1 for being out of luck.
To be honest you haven't got a hope really, I had a friend with the same problem, however he had a NZ Firearms licence, but they weren't interested, bouncers said they can only accept Photo drivers licence, 18+ card and passports.

Those are the only forms of ID that are recognised in the legislation.

Yes, I recall around 1999 when the government of the day announced the lowering of the drinking age to 18 they said that the move was prudent because they had also committed to ensuring that enforcement of drinking laws was more consistent and robust. Whether things turned out that way is debatable.

Reminds me of when I got my full licence just before orientation week at uni, as I only had a paper drivers licence I had to use a passport from when I was 12 years old all week. A photo of me as a 12 year old showed little resemblance to 18year old me, but they legally had to accept it

I'm pretty certain it needs to be photo ID. Unfortunately since a Student ID could be forged easier than a drivers license, and the bar/club may not be familiar with what they should look/feel like, they could be letting in potential frauds. I imagine it's fairly simple to forge a temporary license.

Don't worry, I happen to know that there are certain changes coming up that will mean you'll be fine with a temporary licence, or even without any ID.

I would grow a beard if I was a guy haha and as for the changes, I'm pretty sure they won't be happening before tonight.. i just think its so infair that bars won't accept a temporary license, alot people don't have any other form of photo id other than a license and its not my fault they make temporary ones without a photo!!!
who would forge a temporary license anyway?? haha

I can't see this happening any time this millennium.

I'm afraid they definitely will. There's nothing you can do to stop them. Probably even in the next five years or so.

As per the Sale of Liquor Act you are required to present approved PHOTO ID when requested.

This maybe a

CURRENT New Zealand Drivers Licence
CURRENT Passport
CURRENT HANZ 18+ Card

NO photo then no go

Unless the outlet wishes to risk their licence you will need one of these.
