So, anyone who are residing in NZ today/tonight will be required to complete the NZ Census 2006 form...

just wondering, how many of you will answer "Other > New Zealander" in the question about your ethnic group? Or others that are not better categorised to the provided list?

Personally, I think it is important for all New Zealand Citizens to stick together and acknowledge the proper recognition for being a "New Zealander"...

Many a time, when you look at other countries' form, especially ones that asking for your nationality. Many have options of e.g. Australian, Malaysian, Singaporean, American, Mexican, French, British even New Zealander etc etc... but you never ever see the option "New Zealander" on our NZ forms -- what we get is the faction of New Zealand European, Maori, Samoan, Fijian or any other smaller group...

I hope this would help you all to think a bit about this question tonight, when you answering the question about your ethnic group. Choose Other > and write New Zealander and be recognised as the people of New Zealand.

Internet is my backyard...

Personally I do not think it is that big of an issue. They are just trying to find out what ethnicityyou are (or combination of). Apart from a few overseas visitors we are all New Zealanders. This type of information is important to gather not only as a measure of how our country is changing, but also for planning purposes as different ethnicites have different needs such as health problems, etc.

While I shared your views up to about a week ago, when someone expalined it to me I could see the reason behind it.

I am a first-generation New Zealander, but object to the term European (far less than 50% of me is European).

I have Asian friends who are more New Zealander than I am (2 generations or more), yet somewhere along the line, the markers get blurred, and no one really knows who is who.

Stand up for what you want, and what you believe in. Investigate the alternatives, give them due consideration, but dont be swayed by others just because -they- think they are right.

Other > New Zealander.

Seriously all they want to know is if you are 'white' - ticking NZEuropean would probably mean (most of the time) that you are 'white'. So, I am going to give them what they want.

Tick Other - White.

I am first generation kiwi and I have an 'Asian looking' friend who is 5th generation kiwi. He is more kiwi than me and the odd red neck still tells him 'to go back to where you came from'. My friend always answers 'What? Otago'.

I actually disagree.

Most people seem confused between Nationality and Ethnic Origin. For many of us our Nationality is a New Zealander. Ethnic Origin on the other hand is not your nationality but where your ancestors came from, for most "white" people in New Zealand this is from Europe - ignoring the next issue that most Irish/English/Welsh/Scottish don't consider themselves to be European! :-)

Much to our surprise here at home it was quick and painless. I was expecting an underpowered server on the other side but found it very responsive.

Overall great formula - underpromise and overdelivery.

No where on the form or in the instructions did it say that you had to answer all the questions so they got my name and address - that is it!

Did you sign it? It mentions something at the end about answering all questions honestly and to the best of my ability or words to that effect.

It says...

[48] Starting at question [2], please check your answers before you sign. If the person whose details are on this form is unable to sign, then the person who filled in the form should sign.
I declare that the information I have given is true and complete as far as I know.
