In case anyone is passing it, they are closing down, and selling off all their stock. not sure how much stock they have left and I think it ends this weekend. I picked up some monster digital coax cables which originally sold for $100 each, and they were selling these for just $2 each.

The consumer electronics market has always been a bit overloaded. Bought my TV from them in Auckland. What is the case with warranties etc.?

Isn't it only Lower Hutt closing? I assume Harvey Norman will honour warrenties, as they appear to be the same company, as shown on wikipedia. In fact in Lower Hutt they are both in the Harvey Norman building, one above the other.

Norman Ross

Harvey Norman Holdings Ltd operates Norman Ross stores in New Zealand. The first store, in New Zealand, started in 4 December 2007,1st floor, 28 Rutherford street, Lower Hutt, Wellington.

It's only the Lower Hutt store that's closing. They got a cheap lease in the complex so took up options on a store. Apparently now that the complex is filling up they're not willing to pay market rates so Smiths City are moving in there.

That makes sense, and they were mainly selling what they were selling upstairs, in their Harvey Normans store.

Smiths City owns LV martins, which is next door, so that would be a logical choice for them to move in. Its a bit of deja vu with the mid 90's, when  Smiths City opened many stores throughout wellington.

Ironically... that wasn't long before they went under last time was it?

I recall last time, they blamed it on the recession and expanding too quickly.

However I would prefer to support NZ owned businesses like smiths city, where the profits stay in NZ, than these ozzie owned chains.

If you meant Harvey Norman when you talked about "They are not an "Aussie owned chain" you're actually incorrect.

Harvey Norman stores are actually franchises, with multiple franchise owners for the multiple departments within a store. Sure some profits will go back to Australia, but the the vast majority of profits stay locally.

Since Smiths City is a publically listed company profits don't necessarily stay in NZ as ownership won't be solely from within NZ.

I wasn't meaning them, as I realise they are using the francise system. Although the owner of the franchise system, would still take a decent cut of the profits.

Anwyay, went there today, it's closed already. Compared prices for a new blender and Nespresso coffee machine between LV Martin and Harvey Norman... And bought from LV Martin.

The Nespresso machine at LV Martin was already $70 cheaper, and they had a 20% sale so it was a good buy.
