I would like to ask on behalf of a friend who wishes to move to Australia to live permanently.

They are current holding a permanent resident Visa in NZ so I wonder will they need to apply for any Australia's visa before they go? Thanks

As far as I remember it depends on their passport. but NZ residence visa gives no right in AU.

timtim, afraid not.

In fact it is not even passport dependent if you intend to live there permanently as you still need a visa regardless.

You need the minimum of a NZ passport to jump the ditch.

I am on a South African passport, have NZ PR. But still need a visitors visa to go for a holiday in Aus. Cant move there either.

That said, there is nothing stopping you from applying for Australian residence, or an Australian working visa. Having NZ PR will give you no benefit.

They should be patient and get NZ citizenship. Then there is no doubt at all.

if the yproceed as you suggest, they risk losing their permanent resident status in NZ if they don't reside here for too much of the year over too long a period..and Immigration do watch these movements. Should that happen, at that point, they go back where they came from.....

Needless to say, both NZ *and* AU take a dim view of people using NZ as a back door to Australia. There would be little sympathy from either country for an impatient non-citizen with a well-developed sense of entitlement.
