I drew the short straw, and I've been commanded to get the in-laws 0.5ish cubic metres of soil for their new raised garden, that my partner's brother so helpfully bought.

Looking for somewhere out near me (Manukau).  Anyone who has dirt, I have beers - wanna swap?

Landscape supply shop is what you need. Just be warned though, they get a bit touchy if you don't call it soil!

Trademe often has some good deals and you can negotiate too

0.5m3 isn't much though and you'd prob have to pick it up

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Outdoor-garden-conservatory/Landscaping-materials/Soil-mulch-compost/mcat-0004-0375-4020-6870-.htm

Keep in mind you dont want just top soil or just compost, you want to buy "garden mix" which will be ready to put straight into beds

You need something pre-mixed and pre-aged like this:

Too bad you didn't want it earlier when they were doing the roadwork's for that new motorway link. You could have scrounged some from them for a box of beers...

Topsoil Delivery are in Manukau:

http://www.topsoildelivery.co.nz/

Topsoil is $35 per cubic metre plus delivery and they say delivered by truck in 7 days ... although that's a bit odd for a Manukau to Manukau delivery!

Looks like you can actually purchase through TradeMe if you wanted to. That could give you an opportunity to post feedback as well.

Good luck with your dirt!

if you have to pay for delivery from those guys then 0.5m^3 is probably cheaper to just buy in bags from bunnings or similar.

Landscaping places will often loan/rent you a trailer for nothing or for cheap, and usually sell by the scoop or cubic metre. A scoop is about a third of a cubic metre, so you'd probably need two scoops (it usually settles down a bit after watering anyhow, so you could probably do with a little extra).

There is about 12 bags to a scoop, so works out significantly cheaper than buying by the bag.

Instead of just soil, you might want to get a compost/fertilizer/soil mix, especially if they are going to grow some veges.

Alittle off topic, but imagine my surprise when looking at the very first listing:

Compared to an ad I put up on a client's website some months back:

Cheeky sods.

Could be, however they are into horses, and my client is an equestrian store, so too close a coincidence I think.

I've just done the garden stones thing. Scoop was 250 litres, or 0.250m3.

Bags are not the way to go at all unless you only need a few small pots filled.

Most places will deliver for a fee, often $20 or something, or give you a loan trailer, either free or $5 charge etc.

Watch any trailer you use as it's your responsibility for wof/reg etc if you use it.
