Hi there, Next year Jan me and a mate are going to stay with some of my family down in Christchurch. They live up on Mt. Pleasant and work most of the day so we'll need public transport to in and out of town. Does anyone happen to live up there? What is the name of the bus service that runs there so I can research it?
Also what are some low-ish costing activities to do in CHCH? What are some good places to go sign seeing? Cheers guys.

www.metroinfo.co.nz.

If you're going to be using the buses regularly then it would be worthwhile for you to get a Metrocard.

The bus services there are very good; you should find Sumner and Mt Pleasant well covered.

Hey

+1 on the metrocard also if your going to get the bus from the airport you will definitely want a metrocard for that.

Places to check out would be Lyttelton Harbour, Port Hills, Sumner, Akaroa. Or you could go the other way and check out Arthur's Pass, some great walks up there. Maybe head out to Hanmer Springs for the hot pools.

In Christchurch itself there is an Ice Skating rink if your into that. Some really good art centers and museums. There is always the cathedral too. Little bit of quake damage to check out too.

Christchurch is a great place, enjoy it.

I'll second MattRSK's motion on the Art Centre & Museum. While you're over that way the Botanic Gardens are are a real treat, especially on a nice day. I sometimes forget we have something so lovely in the city centre. (Billy Connolly always makes sure he visits it when he comes to NZ, it's that cool).

I'd also recommend the ChCh Gondola, not sure if that's in your price range. I live in ChCh and never do "touristy" things but went up there on a whim not long ago and it was a nice reminder of how much lovely scenery is just sitting on our doorstep. I need to get out more!

Awesome stuff, I read that they can only post metro cards to people who live in that area so I'll get one when I arrive. They seem to be just like the snappa cards they use in Wellington when I went there last year.

In defence of johnr - That part of the question did seem a fairly obvious thing for google to help you with - "Public transport bus christchurch" - google brings the right place to look at right at the top of the list.

But fair enough you want some local knowledge on things to do/places to go etc - Local knowledge is always the best.

Christchurch is a pretty city - I am sure you will have a great visit - dont forget your hard hat ;-)

I completely forgot Lyttelton was right next door, I so have to go see that. Cheers for all the other suggestions too. Do you still get many after shocks now down there? I've never experienced any earthquake activity before lol

Yeh I went on the Gondola like 7 years ago hahaha, cant remember very much about it except that I left my bag at the top. And I'd absolutly love to see the Art centre. Seems like so much to do down there! Thanks for this

If you can afford it the trans-alpine train to Greymouth is really good - pretty amazing scenery. There is also the trans coastal which takes you to Kaikoura/Picton.

I LOVE that trip - especially once you come out next to the sea. The viewing deck is awesome... not so nice for my camera though - the sea mist screwed up my zoom.

The aftershocks are still pretty much daily, but most aren't noticeable.
