I think they are, I was just thinking the other day when reading posts from ex Zillion members who claim to be more than regular posters on Zillions boards blaming the reason why Zillion died was because not enough advertising. That might be correct but Im sure the MB had plenty to do with it. It was dead. I would pop in there from time to time and see the same 12 or 15 posters on the mb, all cosy up in their meaningless group not really being friendly to outsiders. It was like if your not in our group your not welcome type of thing. Now they're complaining why Zillion went down the gurglar and fail to see they were part of the reason of Zillions destruction! :)

I bet if TM did a survey asking members if they think the MB is important for the site you would get an overwhelming response of a yes. Of course TM would still soldier on without the MB being how big it is but for small auction sites starting up they need to push the MB as well. If people come to chat they will browse the site looking at goods from time to time.

I've never used the message board. Why would I go to an auction site to post on a message board?

Cause they are needed just look at trademe mb.  You can ask questions about the site, make friends, seek help on problem traders, newbies can get help from veteran traders etc., heaps of reasons to visit an auction mb.  TM Admins frequent the boards answering questions put up by members.

I remeber when I first joined TM in their first year, my response was this site will die within the year lol and never went back to it for months then the job I had back then I needed some computer help so asked in the computers section and got all the help/advice I needed they went out of their way to help.  From that time on, I just kept going back to the boards and started bidding on stuff as well.

The message boards on trademe are important, as they do create a social network, but I do think they are poorly integrated into the site. Not too easy to find either. There are some nutcases however who hang out on it. I did try the Zillion one, but the people on it were mean and nasty, and as you mention they all appear to be a group, and didn't welcome newbies. Their website was never going to succeed, as it was impossible to sell anything on it due to hardly any visitors, and it had to offer something that trademe didn't have. Thus it probably had to be free.

yeah have to agree there and your right about the nutters in TM there is plenty of em. I mainly head to the computer section, books section or where the admins go to answer questions - trademe discussion. Avoid General, Opinions, and Parenting, Ive heard so much about parenting and how bad it is in there its like as if mums are waiting to bite your head off. lol
