On the outskirts of Christchurch centre, to the North.
Well, there  was a bit of a rumble and the walls shook a bit.
However this was not much different from a bus passing and there is quite a bit of traffic.

So how can you be sure if it was an aftershock or just a bus?

My question was not well formed.

I guess I meant 'apart from going and checking GeoNet, how do you tell'.

The 4.7 early this morning was certainly not a bus.

I actually live on the Ring Road on the western side of Chch and can tell you that the quakes out our way are drastically different from a bus, even the heavy trucks we get down here alot, we hear those vehicles going past, but they dont shake or move the house.

Experience? Most people who have endured a few Earthquakes get a sixth sense for them. There's a low sound and a slight shudder before it hits thats completely different from a heavy vehicle or train. I know with my mates and colleagues we now take predictions on the Magnitude, depth and distance and are getting pretty good at getting it right :-D

You're travelling through NZ aren't you LGC?

Now camping at Waikuku Beach in our brand new canvas tent and all the accessories.
The instructions said to hose it down the first time you put it up but the heavens obliged and it has been well washed down.

We had a shake yesterday late afternoon.
No rumble (I thing this comes mainly from tin roof noise) but the table and the wine glasses wobbled for quite a bit.
No traffic was passing :-)

We are currently preparing a list of all the little bits we realised would be helpful after our trial camping night.
Nothing major (we are experienced campers) just things like a second rubber hammer so we can both bash pegs in at the same time.

We have bought a Freedom Millbrook (2009 version which is a lot bigger than the 2010 version) and so far are very impressed.

This should appear for sale around February next year, although we have already had one couple say they would like to buy it even before we had finished putting it up for the first time.

We started out looking at $300 nylon tents and ended up with a canvas one with a list price of $2,500 (although we saved a bit in the sales) but so far it looks like the right decision.
If we still feel that way in a month then we will be well pleased.

Cheers

LGC
