Hi, I have reason to believe that companies may be monitoring website traffic, and contacting those who look at the website. The reason is, I was looking at a website, for a carpet cleaning company (We have used them before.) and a few days later they contacted us, 2 times the one day, and once the day after. Leaving a message on two of the three occassions. Another time, some time back, I was looking at the HRV website, and a few days after that, we got contacted, by a telemarketer, asking if we were intrested in a HRV system.

Surely this practice can't be legal.

What do you guys think?

It's impossible to get your phone number from your IP address unless you gave it to them or they hacked your ISP.

Wouldnt count on it with things like facebook etc.

Probably far too advanced for NZ marketeers to use, I would say coincidence since if you had not been looking at those products and they called you would just think "F*&(&ING telemarketers" and everyone else they interrupted would not have been looking for their services.

That's what I thought. They do have phone number. But it's just weird, that these companies haven't contacted us for months on end, then I check their website, and a few days later I recieve a phone call.

Facebook does not give out your phone number unless your Account is open our you allowed an application to take your details.

The only way is if you handed it over to them, through a form or survey.

Yes, but why? What would the ISP get from it apart from the chance of a masive court case?

I highly doubt it.

Are you posting here on the forums from your work connection? I have a theory on how they are tracking you down.

No, I'm posting from my personal connection. I understand that you guys think this isn't possible, that's exactly what I thought. Untill the second time, I checked their website, and we got 3 phone calls from, a few days later. 3 within two days. They also left a message on our voicemail. Normally companies don't leave messages apparantly.

What I have done, is I have gone back into those two websites. If we recieve another call from those companies, I'll keep you updated.

Its not going to happen, there is no way with NZ's privacy laws that they will know who you are. What will probably happen is that you will get another call because that's just how the work!

ISP's can't sell your info and your IP has no relation to your actual details unless they have access to all your private info via the ISP.
