Hi All,

I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to write a 'how to' for this, or to point me in the right direction where it has already been done. Blog post, in this thread, I'm not fussed.

I'm not quite sure what I want specifically, but from the reading I have done it looks like: Get my own domain & get a host for it. I do not want a free email address such as @hotmail/@gmail (unless I am doing something really stupid here and this is actually the best option).

Ideally I would like to have this email address for the rest of my life, have 1 or possibly 2  different addresses and be able to send & receive email using my phone (I'm currently using Nokia messaging email), with emails being synced between computer & phone...so I guess it needs to do IMAP.

I've never done this before, so it would be a learning experience and it would be greatly appreciated.

Any takers? It doesn't have to be today or tomorrow, but the near future would be great.

Thanks,
Nick.

What do you want to use the domain for? Web hosting and email, or just email?

For email I suggest Google apps email, a simple easy to setup syrup that allows you to use your domain as an email address eg/ nickd@.co.nz

At the moment, just email.

If just moved a mate over to Google Apps, and she has her own .co.nz domain.  The next step is so setup Nokia Messaging on her E63 so she can use the web interface and her phone and both are kept in sync.

It's all not too hard to do, if you need some help, flick me a PM.

Ok then, how about a tutorial on how to setup google aps and a.co.nz email address with it?

Opinions are my own and not the views of my employer.

Tried looking at the google apps website, I'm sure they will have it on there, or just search on Google, there will be tutorials for it all over the web

Basically very few steps:

1.Have a domain name
2.Visit http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/group/index.html for free service (up to 50 accounts)
3.Follow instructions on screen

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I read the Google aps site last night and it looked pretty straight forward, it's just the getting a domain that's a grey area now.

Any recommendations who with, how much approx. should I be paying, things to watch out for, does the end of the domain (.co.nz/.com) really have any significance seeing it's going to just be used for email?

www.domains4less.co.nz

Cheap and easy to point to google apps. Used to have Tuesday specials, not sure if thats still going on...

The end domain makes no difference. All email just gets redirected to your email host.

.coms will be cheaper, you can get them for under $10 a year. Having said that $20 bucks a year isn't that bad for a .co.nz

Ok, so Google aps have been mentioned. What is the difference between that and this?

im thinking about switching my email to google apps as well, currently i have gmail just fetching my email from my host via pop3, but i tend change hosts every once in a while and that can be annoying.

i also have a gmail account, can i tie that gmail account to my email for my domain in google apps? ie will i still have one central place for all my emails? or can i just login to my normal gmail and connect to the domain google apps gmail?

i basically want
- central place for all emails
- not to lose any of the emails/contacts/calendars etc already in my gmail account
- be able to not lose any emails when domain is being switched to different hosts, ie mail.mydomain.com points to gmail, mydomain.com points to webhost.

cheers

Google apps would be far superior, especially with search and spam filtering.

You would need to setup a new account under Google Hosted Apps, and the email from all your accounts (including your Gmail account) to the new email address.  This would allow you to have one place for everything.

I'm not too sure about contacts and calendars, though I'm sure they can also be moved.

There is no downtime or loss of emails if the switch is done correctly.

Aside from the spam filter, I intend to send/receive using an email client rather than something web based. Would this change anything or is it still Google Aps all the way?

You can still use your favourite desktop client, and pick either POP or IMAP.
