I was wondering if anyone here uses a straight (cut-throat) razor for shaving? I have decided I would like to start using one because I'd like to learn a new skill.

I have been informed that Thiers Issard Sabatier blades are very high quality but am looking for opinions and options from other users before I consider making a purchase.

What retailers/suppliers should I look at for accessories (brushes, soap, strops, stones etc...)

Thank you all in advance for your answers.

Where abouts in the country are you? There are a couple of crowd's in Auckland who do man grooming with them. Talking to them would probably help you out I guess...

A good shaving cream is the Palmolive Shave Cream 65 grm tube. About $3.50 a tube which is pretty reasonable. They used to have it in a 50grm stick but the price skyrocketed. The last price I heard was $10.00 a stick.! Ridiculous to say the least. Have been useing the tube stuff for many years now. No problems with it.

I don't use shaving cream - it can dry your skin. Instead I use King of Shaves oil. The Kinexium oil to be exact. Always with lots of warm water (I shave in the shower), only need one or two drops per shave, and you can use under shaving cream if you really want.

Be a man grow a beard!  Only need to trim mine up once or twice a month.

Although you do get a few man points for wanting to use a lethal weapon to scrape off your stubble I suppose.

Haha nice video! I'm just coming out of a long term beard relationship... xD

I'm currently in Wellington but will probably troll around to a few barbershops and ask some advice.

I wouldn't use a (cut-throat) razor my self that's like going back in time from windows 7 to windows 3.1 so to speak. I use the gillette quattro titanium and nivea shave gel which I find effective on my skin.
I personally think that beads look ugly in this day and age it and girls like smooth skin not a gorse brush

To be honest I grow a beard a few times a year because I can't be bothered shaving, and I'm quite surprised by the number of women who do like a beard.

I think a better analogy would be its like going back to LPs after using CDs, with due care the results are actually a bit better, but its so much less convenient.

I have found that shaving with the multi-bladed razors tends to leave my skin with small red 'dots' and have found shaving with a single bladed razor does not have this effect.

I think in the long run having this skill will save me cash and be quite useful, I'm finding it difficult to glean much information though.

My Dad uses a cut throat razor. The biggest thing he told me is that you need your razor DEAD sharp. Not just sharp when pressure applied but drop a apple and cut it in half sharp.

Oh and also don't slip :P
