From a police person.
L408 - driving with an expired licence label $200

From the council? I am not sure.

If you can't afford the rego you need to take the bus

Don't forget to put rego on hold

In the good old days when they had coloured rego's I used for many years various items such as the front of a Pall Mall Menthol packet for the green rego, and Pall Mall standard ( I think) for that years red rego.

Didnt stand up to close examination, but worked many times when being glanced at by the MOT.

and tell your insurance company the bike is off the road while the rego is on hold, should save you some $$ if you alter the insurance cover

you can even do it by the month but they dont tell you you can , works out more expensive over the year but it beats paying the $200 fine for not having one

The fine is $200 no matter who gives it, the Police or a parking warden, also the license must be continuous so you will have to pay it eventually (unless you put it on hold as suggested) but then you can't ride the bike on the road without risking further fines.

Fines are dead money, if you are considering the risk of facing the fine then you are better off just licensing it in the first place....or take the bus.

@rscole86
How is it that the Councils have the ability to charge different rates to the Police??

Curious because Councils charge $150 for inadvertent (ie: outside the 50m) use of a bus lane; but I get caught speeding (which potentially is far more dangerous) and can get fined much less (depending on the speed).

@Bounty... I'd just register for the shorter periods as suggested, you may find you don't use the bike in say winter and so can save 3 mths rego then. The new fees are, in my view, poorly thought through, but maybe thats because I'm effectively paying ACC levies on a Car and a bike, so I'm paying twice and I can only use one of them at a time.

I agree the $400 rego is extremely high, but ACC are convinced this will help pay for all the motorcycle accidents that cause high medical costs etc.

Put your rego on hold, and make sure you don't park in public place. The risk is on you though, should you have an accident your insurance may not come to the party.

The ironic thing is that if you do have an accident while your rego is on hold and your at fault, ACC will still cover your injury.

1. The penalties are set by legislation for each offence, the same offence will attract the same penalty no matter who dishes it out.  I agree however that some penalties seem disproportionate to the seriousness.

2. Couldn't agree more, but the powers that be have long decided that motorcycle injuries are a drain on ACC coffers....the old user pays.

I assume councils charge the same, but do not know.

The police also charge $150 for driving in an unauthorised lane. Speeding may be less, but it does come with demerit points, so potentially has a greater affect on your day to day life.

If you can't afford registration, then you'll have no insurance. If you don't have insurance, get off the road!!!

I don't want to be hit by you on my motorcycle or in my car and then find out you have no insurance or rego. Or vice versa, in case I accidentally hit you.

It's the price you pay, I've got exactly the same letter on my fridge at home and I'm going to pay 3 months at a time. You should too! and judging by the fact you are a uni student, your bike will probably be 150-250cc? That's $12 a month in insurance, that's just a bit more than a large combo at McDonalds now

One month of a clear conscience to enjoy getting where you want to be
....or.....
a large Macca combo and 5 minutes of talking with your mouthfull

I can feel the thrill of the road... and smell the spell of MacDonalds. Tough choice

ok thanks for the replies. i understand the important role acc has etc, but the $250 bill for rego is fine. Just frustrating how rego is now $400+ and then insurance on top of that, fuel (isnt bad at all, but adds up) and warrant of fitness and services.
ill be walking to work now... save a good $1,000 or so.
