So, just recently, had the car playing up a bit.

Took it into BMW and what not, thinking it was a coil. BMW put it on the computer and said that they couldnt see any fault codes with any of the coils. I told them to then take it for a drive and see what happens and let me know.

So they came back from the drive, and they are saying they think its the Torque convertor.. all is well and good, but my question is; could the torque convertor mess with the consumption of fuel?

More out of curiosity than anything (Im not bothered, it's not my car, and It's going back to my step dad soon) but it's got me thinking. What could a damaged torque convertor could do if not running optimally (I mean, other than right out failing, and not allowing the car to run).

I'm no mechanic, but it stands to reason that any sort of transmission problem could cause fuel consumption issues. If the pump is spinning at a good speed but the turbine isn't then obviously the power generated by the engine is not going to be making it through to the driveshaft.

Sudden loss of power maybe? That can be very dangerous, so it really needs to go to a transmission specialist.

It pays to get automatics serviced by a specialist every 25,000km as they're cheap to maintain but very expensive to fix.

Yeah, it has been losing power lately, which is why I decided to take it into get looked at. For me, it was uncomfortable to drive around in at low speeds (60km).

The Torque convertor is being sent away to be repaired, should have the car back hopefully by Friday at the earliest, but more likely Monday or Tuesday.


The guy at BMW said that 1/3 of them come back 100% better, 1/3 comes back worse, and 1/3 comes back mainly unchanged (which is why they recommend replacing not repairing).

But my step dad was paying, so I wasnt about to argue. His car, his money, his choice.



But yeha, it'll be interesting to see about fuel consumption, because im pretty sure it's been progressively getting piggier, but im not sure if thats because ive been driving more and not noticed I have been, or just because it is actually getting worse. It will be interesting to see what it's like when it comes back.

Being a 2.5ltr V6, more fuel cosumption is something you notice quite quickly.


It's not due for a service for another 16,000km's. So that's alright. But I might get them to service it while it's in there.. May as well.
