Went swimming today with a bunch of mates from school and their mates too, didn't put enough sun block on my face and just as well I left my shirt on because the part of my face that did get burnt, is super super red and mega painful. Kind of looks like I have one of these on http://rogerscompany.biz/images/opera_mask.jpg except it extends to my nose as well. Lol. And my arms are burnt as well as my feet but not my legs for some reason.

So who else has been burnt so far?

Burnt my arm a couple of weeks ago on a road trip out to Pukekohe, but thats about it so far :)

About 6 years ago, I was stupid and got seriously burnt, had blisters etc all over my back..was not pleasent at all :(

So DO wear sunblock, not matter how long youre outside for... your partner will thank you for it ;)

Been burnt a good 3 times so far this season, and this is with putting on sunblock as well. Guess im not re-applying enough! Had one of those blister sessions myself a few years ago, not pleasant at all! had it on my shoulders which made it rahter painful to sleep. All because i didnt put any sunblock on, it was a 32degree day here in Blenheim and i was outside for an hour and a half in a singlet, lets say i wont be doing that again!

A couple of minor sunburns across the shoulders and back whilst working outside, on cloudy days. Cloudy days are the ones that get you - not too hot to feel uncomfortable, but burns you just as fast if you are not careful.

Been burnt on the thighs and feet once or twice while fishing - man that hurts !!! Painful to wear long pants and shoes when that happens.

When I was younger (talking 20+ years ago now) I used to do the whole tan thing, 15 mins on this side, flip, another 15 and so forth, for 2 hours or more, and never got burnt. I didn't use any kind of lotion to block back then either.

Now, I can get burnt when outside for 30 mins when using sunblock, so the sun is way different than it was then. I haven't been burnt this year (touch wood!) but I remember burning the soles of my feet one year...that was painful.

Not burnt this year yet, hate sunscreen - just mostly avoid peak time, don't spend more than 20min outside in the couple of hours either side of solar noon which is about 1.30pm in NZ...

Note: Complete avoidance of peak time is not recommended as some peak time sun is required for the body to produce vitamin D.

15-20min is plenty for my pale skin tone.

Here is (my) example of what has to happen later in life if one does not be sun smart at younger age...

Oh geez that photo looked painful. Im going to make more of an effort I think to reapply sunblock which seems to be the big issue, like when I went to Waiwera hot pools with mates family a few years back, we were outside, shirtless since the park opened and until it closed that day. Had to sleep on my front for about a week and couldnt wear a shirt for about 3 days. Never learnt.

I once heard a dermatologist say that all the damage is done up to the age of 18. I don't know if he meant that once you're 18 you don't have to worry so much (I doubt it) but I suspect he meant that if you weren't careful up to that age, the damage to your skin is such that even if you're ?ber careful from now on, you've already done enough damage to cause issues. Scary.

Not like smoking, where as soon as you stop smoking your body will take steps to repair the damage you have done.

The lesson is always wear sunscreen. I didn't really as a kid and I never remember getting really badly burned. I've burned and peeled but never blisters and can't sleep on it, etc. I do still worry though. Maybe I should go for a mole map, like my friend did. Not sure why they needed to check his nads! I guess they were just being "thorough"!

I had a mole map done 4 years ago. I think it was $250. Best part of it is getting a CD with photos of full body and closeup shots of moles. It means one can do at home comparisons later for changes.

I'm classified as high risk for melanoma, as I recall getting burnt a lot under 12, to point skin was peeling all the way from hairline to waist, oozing blisters on nose, etc. I might add that most times I got in that state I was wearing sunblock, and good sunblock, but was swimming so it wears off fast. Even re-applying it did not stop ending up crispy critter. Like the ad that used to be on TV, skin type and childhood exposure pretty much sets you up for life.

The above photo was 1 of 4 cut out over 2 year period.

31 now, 27 when I started needing hunks cut out.

NZ European, dark brown hair, always had some non facial freckles/moles, number is increasing with age. Highest concentration now on arms and neck/face which receive highest amount of solar radiation.

I should add the 4 cut out were located in places that haven't seen the sun since age of 14, ie back/shoulders, which may be the result of the burning/peeling I got back then. Perhaps my arms/face/neck will catch up and do the same in another 5 or 10 years?
