Thanks to google, they appear to be replacing it with a search key. Besides knobs who think this key was designed to respond to customer services to get their message across better... or to TROLL!

It got me thinking; when is a company going to grow one and release a real calibration for their keyboards that is more logical? I understand there have been better designs for years, but it is about time something was done. After all the current US layout was designed to stop us from mashing the strokes from an old typewriter, meaning we had to type slower... Please don't flame me if I am wrong but that was my understanding.

The capslock is not dead. It's configurable as Capslock or Search.

It's like those Dell laptop that come with Fn activated by default - if you want to use F1 - F12 instead of Fn F1 - Fn F12 you have to change in the BIOS.

Bah, why don't they get rid of "Scroll Lock" - that's gotta be a horrible legacy key.
Yes, I've read the Wiki entry :-)

Agree, that Scroll Lock key does nothing more than light up an LED on my keyboard - what a waste of power! Tongue out

New HP laptops do the same.

Personally I think its good to have more dual functions with some keys.

It should be switched off, and thus not costing you anything in power drain . :)

It has some uses when dealing with terminals (something windows folks wont know about) and has had other roles over the years (back in the day I recall the Scroll Lock was a quick way to set the Sysop as unavailable on my BBS :))

I use the caps lock occaisionally too, among other things generating pager messages - capital letters are often more easily read on a pager screen.

I find it amusing that all the keys on my keyboard are worn, except the upper row keys + Caps Lock.

Goes to show how much I use it.
