Just heard on ZM newsbeat that Air NZ's first one arrives today but the best I could find on google is a twitter post saying the hand-over is today. But if it is enroute then I'm picking it will do a low fly over Auckland on the way to AKL.
Will mean the end of an era for the 747 as they are being replaced for the 777-300 (and 787 when they arrive one day)

It arrvies in NZ from LA on the 24th. Not sure of it's movements after that.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I don't know of their plans, but I would be very surprised if they kept the 747-400 in service long term because the 777-300 would offer them much better efficiency and flexibility over routes.

The 777 is SO MUCH better than the 747 in comfort terms. I flew a Singapore Air 777 from Melb to Singapore and it was amazing. Swapped to a 747 from Singapore to Frankfurt and omg what a dinosaur! Luckily there was an empty 2 seats in front of me so after takeoff I swapped....until then I was stuck next to another 6' + guy (I'm 6'4"!) with half my torso sticking out into the aisle :) Was dreading 12 hours of that flight.

Air NZ are replacing all their 747-400's with 777's and 787's (when they arrive) which are also replacing their 767's. The first 747-400 was scrapped last year and I believe the last one was scheduled to go in a couple of years time.

From NZ Herald Take Off for Air NZ's 'economy class revolution'

Not only does the aircraft contain the much-heralded Skycouch - the lie-flat economy seat dubbed cuddle class - it also has the Premier Economy Spaceseat which either lets couples get closer together or gives individual passengers more privacy from their neighbours.

Passengers will be able to order food on demand that is cooked on board, rather than reheated. The inflight entertainment service has access to YouTube, provides news updates, and lets the passenger communicate directly with the concierge.

Food cooked on board? Sure this is for business class passengers only? How could they cook on board for 300 people on economy?

Remember the ads for Boeing 747 when it was launched? The upper deck was supposed to have a bar, etc. What happened? Airlines crammed seats there, and reduced space in economy to carry more people.

Air New Zealand is a good example, removing the Space+ seats from domestic and Trans-Tasman flights this year. If you don't know the Space+ seats were the first six or so rows with an extra three inches legroom, usually reserved for people with Gold status or Koru members who remembered to select seats online (or at the airport when available).

I used those all the time, shame it's gone now.

I saw it fly fly fly across the North Shore this morning on the way to work. Angle of attack was pretty steep - must be doing a very slow fly by!

A letter was sent out a few weeks ago informing us the Space + seats will be coming back.

For those who are getting excited about the many cool features of this plane it's worth noting that it's Air NZ's first 777 to go with a 3-4-3 economy seat plan.

The existing 777-200's are 3-3-3 so now there is an extra seat per row in the 300's. You still get good seat pitch but the seats are now narrower than before. This gives them space to fit in significantly more premium economy and business class seats at the front while maintaining roughly the same number of economy seats.

There have been a few airlines deploy 10 abreast seating in 777's (such as BA) and many people have disliked it feeling it was too cramped. I've flown on both and have to agree.

If I was flying by myself I would probably just use economy and have a stop over for the price of the the full sky coutch or fly Premium ecomony.

It is a good option for the family though.

It would be good to see in the demo of the Premium economy the seat recline and the video screen location etc.

We will have to have a look on board if it comes to wellington for a look over.
