Hello everyone.

I have read some info about this Family"centre of gravity" policy on the immigration website but I don't really understand how does it work.

My family has 10 members included my parents and 7 of us are here in NZ.Does this policy mean we can apply to sponsor for 3 family members who live in my own country to NZ?

If anyone knowing this policy better please give me some advice.

a few things:

- we have done this for our parents so we have first hand experience.

there is no center of gravity residency category.

you are referring to application for parents to become permanent residents under the family category.

1) this residency application has the lowest priority: allow 18-24 months before they even pick up your form. so don't delay hurry hurry get the papers in!

2) center of gravity refers to the children of your parents (i dont know what happens if your parents have other kids outside of the relationship - just dont tell them i suppose?)

- i deduce they have 8 children. they require 50% = 4 of you guys to be RESIDING in new zealand. residing = citizens or current permanent residents.

if so they qualify

3) they are not eligible for financial assistance for 2 years so one of you guys need to "sponsor" ie guarantee that you can support them financially for the 1st 2 years.

4) dependants: if they are granted permanent residency they can bring in their dependants that they put down on the application form. eg the last sibling which need to be under 24 and not married etc (pls check the fine prints on this)

Just to clarify,my parents and 5 of us got NZ citizen.But I do have 3 brothers who live in my country and they all got married...So can my parents apply for this to bring them here?thank you

i dont think so. they can't apply under the parents category because they are not your parents. they have to apply themselves.

1) sibling category: can only apply if no other immediate ties in the other country - fail (the 3 siblings each have 2 other siblings in the other country

If there are 10 in your family, and 7 are here. Then it means that the center of gravity is here in NZ and you should be able to sponsor the other family members. I assume you have your PR and have had PR for at least 3 years?

If there are 10 in your family, and 7 are here. Then it means that the center of gravity is here in NZ and you should be able to sponsor the other family members. I assume you have your PR and have had PR for at least 3 years?

Yes,there is 10 people in my family and my parents and 5 of us are here in NZ( 7 together)and we all have PR here.

The member above saying that I can't....then you say yes...I'm confused again...

the 'Centre of Gravity' of your family is in New Zealand if

The principal applicant has no dependent children and the number of their adult children lawfully and permanently in New Zealand is equal to or greater than those lawfully and permanently in any other single country; or

The principal applicant has dependent children and the number of their adult children lawfully and permanently in New Zealand is equal to or greater than those lawfully and permanently in any other single country. The number of dependent children must be equal to or fewer than the number of adult children in New Zealand.

This is what it says on the New Zealand Visa Bureau.

The answer is b.

What the guys above are trying to point out, is that with the 'Centre of Gravity' concept, the 'principal applicant' are your siblings in the other country, NOT your parents here.'
If your siblings can't meet the criteria quoted by Mascell, then they can't apply under 'Centre of Gravity'.

Like Joker said, your siblings would have to apply under another category.

You are absolutely right, my apologies,.... I also noticed that this particular policy " Centre of Gravity' was made defunct on 29th November 2010 and it does indeed apply to Parents in another country not parents in this country

the policy is still the same, there has never been a centre of gravity category, only "parents" category. they have removed the term centre of gravity probably because it confuses people as displayed by this rollercoaster thread
