OK, 2011 is just under 12 hours away. What are your New Year resolutions, in terms of technology? Whether that's buying something you've always wanted, not buying or hoping someone develops x....

For me, I hope to not spend money on another new phone, new laptop, new computer or a portable tablet (Tab) of any sort! I have realised how many chargers I have and how I spend at least 30 minutes a day making sure all my gear is charged, sync-ed and updated! Yell

How about you?

Probably to not buy a new phone unless my current one breaks. I've brought 4 phones this year alone, sold 3 of them after about a month. and probably to choose a network and stay with it for the whole year. Have about 5 blank vodafone sims here from all the times I've ported

My no. 1 resolution is to finally join the smartphone revolution. The wife already has an iPhone 4, but I'm keen on getting an Android (even though I think her iPhone is pretty damn cool). The current frontrunner for me is the Samsung Galaxy S, but I'm open to suggestions. In particular, I'm interested in phones that can take concert footage comparable to the iPhone 4 (see my Metallica and Paramore concert vids as the benchmark I'm aiming for).

Next resolution would be figuring out a way to finally get the wife to understand that console games are a legitimate form of storytelling, and wanting to buy more when I already have (in her words) heaps of games is no different to expanding our DVD/BluRay or music collections. In terms of gaming purchases, I also resolve to buy some 'hardcore' games that make good use of the Playstation Move (Killzone 3 is looking pretty good in that regard).

My final resolution may seem a little at odds with the first two, but I also resolve to be a bit more restrained with my tech purchases next year. I'll endeavor to ensure there is a real need before buying the next latest gadget (and yes, gaming purchases do fulfill that requirement ;-))

I'd really like a mid sized tablet, something bigger than an iPod Touch but smaller than an iPad. I really like the iPxd games and apps though, games like trainyard and fieldrunners, so hopefully someone's doing decent games and apps for Android.

The Samsung Tab is the perfect fit then!:)

I didn't say it was a realistic resolution. :-)

I'd like all Banks to follow Kiwibank and ASB and run live banking.
I'd like all banks to process internet banking payments 365 days of the year, not just their branch days.

Totally agree with your two points. Live banking has been with ASB for, well, ages. I don't know why this isn't standard in the banking world yet.

Your second point - agree! If everything is automated these days, why can't we have transactions being sent and received every single day of the year?

Gizmodo call it a train wreck. I expect it will be another year before there's real competition to the iPad from an Android tablet. I don't need a phone, I don't really need 3G, I just want a WiFi tablet.

Well, you don't need to use 3G. You can use the Tab on wifi if you want. Apart from screen size, I cannot see how this Android device is worse than the iPad.  In my opinion, the iPad is just too heavy to hold for any length of time.

The gist of the reviews is it's an ok phone, and an ok tablet, and it's good but it's not great. It sounds like i'll wait for a dedicated tablet, not a phone tablet.
