Been in use at main centres for quite some time now.

Ever since you started seeing them in the back of general purpose Hyundai vans and the likes between the middle rear seats with no orange flash housing on bullbar ;)

And yes.. I'm not kidding they are more stealth than you think now. As you can tell by this video. Not just Mitzi hi-ace anymore. And often hidden between rear cutout guards/seats

Yes the only one that is good at detecting them with advanced warning is the Escort Redline Radar detector.

Here in hawkes bay, we have 4 of the fixed camera housings, with only one camera that gets moved around every few days,

And a pair of vans - blue or white. Very easy to spot when driving.

They sometimes park the vans outside our house in Napier, and my parents live next door. So whenever mom sees the van, she parks her van up behind it, quickly gets out and walks inside. Then when he realises, he has to move the camera van down the road a bit and re measure out and align the camera again. Quite funny.

I made a post (no video) about this around this time last year when I noticed my V1 wasnt finding the camera at all.

If you have a radar that is/was "tuned" for NZ then K would have been turned off. (not your issue here, just a heads up to others who read this.

As always helps if there is soemthing for the radar to bonce off also.

Also what radar detector do you have?

I don't understand why these haven't been banned here yet. The point of speed cameras is to deter you from speeding full stop. You speeders are only contributing to our road toll which is already dangerously high.

"You speeders"? What about those people driving at 70km/h on a 100km/h zone, when it gets close to town they drop to 50km/h on a 70km/h zone?

Yesterday there was a driver in front of us who was doing 80km/h on the State Highway 100km/h zone. He then saw a white van on the side of the road and suddenly reduced to 50km/h - in the middle of a 100km/h zone!

This kind of drivers cause accidents too.

I know they cause accidents but thats why we have the following distance rule. You should have enough distance between the two cars to stop safely should you need to, regardless if they were travelling slow for whatever reason, or because they had to stop too. If I lived on a street with kids playing in the yard, I'd much rather have someone going 30km/h down a 50km/h street instead of someone going 80km/h, loosing it on a corner and hitting someone.

Yeah technically the lead car is fully entitled to reduce speed quickly if they even think they see something that could be a hazard.

I kinda have to disagree.  There are no such things as "accidents", as "crashes" are caused by people 99.99% of the time.

Slow drivers do not cause crashes, impatient, ignorant, and foolish drivers following them do.  People just need to learn to chill out and make allowances for slower more cautious drivers.

As for the speed thing yes speed does cause crashes (no one ever died from a crash in a traffic jam), or if not and something else goes wrong, excessive speed will hasten your demise from this world...speaking from 17 years experience picking up dead bodies from the road.

In the interests of technology the OP was enlightening, however I agree these things should be banned.  It amazes me how people will do anything to avoid getting a ticket, only to be able to continue to do the thing that will get them dead.  I don't think the elevator goes all the way to the top with that reasoning.

@scuwp:

I'd disagree, slow drivers do cause crashes. Especially the ones who toddle along at 70kph with 30 or 40 cars trailing behind. Then, accelerate to 100 on passing lanes and longer straights.

These 'slow' drivers are not only "cautious", they are often selfish, and the police should ticket them more often. In my 20 odd years of driving, I've never seen a cop pull over a slow driver.

I reckon, if the police clamped down on slow drivers more often, the road toll would reduce.

I agree with you, but they don't cause the crash, they just contribute to the circumstances.  For example not wearing a seatbelt does not cause a crash, but it contributes to the outcome if you have one.  So in that regard yes, ticket the slow drivers, educate them to be more considerate, and if you can't keep a reasonable highway speed maybe you should not have a licence.

BUT...thats not going to happen so we all need to be a bit more tollerant is al I am saying.

Back to the OP:  technology will keep changing, and I see the latest system will not use radar at all (time over distance with numberplate recognition it seems)

The best way to avoid the Police "revenue collecting" is not speed in the first place.  Imagine what more time the Police will have to solve the 'real' crimes if that happens

A slow crash may not yeld the same number of fatalities but it is still a crash. Slow drivers are not always being cautious, and some are hogging a limited resource for sometimes long periods of time.

And if you've ever driven in the UK you'll realise that like speed cameras these make absolutely no difference at all to open road speeds!

The fact no demerit points are issued on speed camera tickets here in NZ shows they are solely for revenue gathering and not a serious attempt to change driver behaviour.
