Anyone have any good suggestions for a mid-year holiday.  Criteria along the lines of:

1. Family friendly (3 and 10 year old)
2. Don't mind maxing the credit cards out but don't want a second mortgage to pay for it
3. The shorter flight time the better (flying with a toddler is hardly fun for us or others)

Done the Queensland thing a couple of times and really don't want to go back to Australia again.

Quite like the idea of sitting on a beach somewhere but that might be a bit boring for the kids.

Any suggestions?

billgates: Fiji?

Yeah, that's probably up near the top of the list.  Is there anything there for the kids though?  Sitting on the beach, restaurants, shows etc all sound great to me, but not so sure the kids will be interested.

Any actual island you have been to that you would recommend?

Never been to Fiji but brother has and recommends it highly. Personally I recommend Dubai. It has something for everyone. Cheap too if you book it online. Airport is HUGE too. Big skyscrapers etc. I did desert safari and sand surfing. It is a loooong flight though but totally worth it.

Treasure Island is set up for families and the kid club is great

Where do you live?
Seriously... Waiheke - its really nice - they take NZ currency too ;-)
Otherwise you are looking at the usual range of South Pacific swelteringly humid places..

From a former travel agent... (my better half) they all have kids clubs, as per the links below.

You can try; in order of recommendation best to worst

Shangri-la - mainland

Outrigger on the Lagoon - mainland

Sonaisali Island Resort - mainland

Treasure Island - requires water taxi

Castaway Island - requires water taxi

Fiji gets my vote also.

Went to Castaway as a child / teenager over the years. They had kids club & water sports / day activities for the kids. Banana boat rides, treasure hunts etc etc As i teenager i also learnt to dive there and got my open & advanced licence. They even did evening kids activities so the adults could party.

Depends on your definition of a new mortgage, but just got back from vomo in Fiji, was spectacular. The food is really excellent as well (and I have very very high standards). it's all inclusive and has an excellent kids club, snorkeling is spectacular as well.

I've been to Fiji a few times, it's awesome. Plenty of activities for the kids too, just pick the right resort. I was in "Lomani Island" resort, no children allowed, but the resort next door caters for families.

The islands are much nicer than the mainland.

Food is decidely average in Fiji with the exception of a few of the more exclusive resorts. Until I found Vomo I would never have gone back. I can't understand with 8 flights a day into Fiji from nearby countries like NZ/Aus why they can't get fresh milk and meat.

The food in Fiji is ok to good, depending where you go. It's never been bad, and i've been to five resorts (including wander to other resorts on islands I stayed on). The food in a good restaurant in definitely better.

Thanks for the constructive replies, especially rscole86 with the links even. Looks like Fiji might be the go. My 10 year old has his sights set on a month in Disneyland, but I think my bank manager would have a coronary.

Fiji - Coral Coast is also lovely. The locals are very friendly, and we had a great time.
