Well actually, I need a set: a central unit with answerphone, and two more handsets.

I'll only have to plug the main unit into a phone jack, right?

Correct, Only the base would need a line connection.

Rather nice looking, huge range and well featured cordless: Uniden XDECT R055 +2

Those are a little pricey for what I'm after. I don't really need all those features.

the Uniden Elite 9035+2 was looking great until I saw some reviews. Seems that looks are all it has going for it...

The uniden with the repeater in the remote charging bases I tried was a shocker. Less echo talking in a cave, would swap out to some strange hiss sound sometimes and it had the worst ergonomics of any phone I have seen in a while.

dont get fooled by cheap cordless phones, sound quality is poor on the cheap models

at the moment i'm using the panasonic KX-TG8323NZB (triple pack) awesome phone

Definitely steer well clear of the Uniden Elite 9035 model. We had one in the middle of last year for a couple of months and it was appalling - horrendous echo, people on the other end would sometimes not be able to hear us, and calls randomly disconnected. After going through the usual warranty replacement process (during which Uniden tested it and said 'no problem found') we ended up getting a refund from the store we bought it from (the manager of that store even tried it on his own line and experienced the same problem, confirming we weren't going mad!).

We then bought the Panasonic KX-TG8328NZB triple pack (like mrphil), and haven't looked back since. Put simply, it works (although it does have some rather strange options for the ring-tone!).

I use the Uniden Elite 9035 +1 and it's great. The base sits in the kitchen with a satellite upstairs in our bedroom. Call quality is awesome, phone features are good, and the answerphone works as it should. Best of all the handsets are super slim and a decent size in your hand - not a fan of those tiny handsets.

I've got the KX-TG8328NZB now.

Those of you that also have it, is there any way to turn off the screen backlights on the handsets while they are sitting in their bases/chargers?

get something that doesn't run on the same frequency as your wireless router, or you will regret it.

KX-TG8328NZB is 1.8GHz, it's the 5.8GHz phones that are the issue, aren't they?

It doesn't really matter to me though, as I've just installed a CAT6 wired network.

As experienced in ChCh - get a phone that doesnt require power to operate in the event of a cut. eg get a hard wired base set with cordless extensions

+1 just have a crusty single phone that doesnt need power, then have the flash 4 pack for luxury

The corded one in the base of a friends flash cordless system doesn't let you dial out if there is no power, the keypad is dead. Stupid design there.
