Some of you may have already seen it, but if not, let your non-geek friends know there's a phishing scam targeting TradeMe going round. I got this this morning (the links have been unlinked):

Security Note: Trade Me will never ask you for your password via email

We regret to inform you that if you did not re-update your account information, your Trade Me account will be suspended for a period of 3-4 days and as result it will be terminated.

Also we regret to inform you that if you don't re-update your account, you have to register a new one and this will require a new registration fee.

For the User Agreement, Section 9, we may immediately issue a warning, temporarily suspend, indefinitely suspend of terminate your membership and refuse to provide our services to you if we belive that your actions may cause financial loss or legal liability for you, our users or us.

Please click here and login to your account in order to re-update it.


Our customer support team is also available to help address any concerns you have. If you're not sure if a message you've received is genuinely from Trade Me just get in touch with us via the contact us link on the site. We'll be happy to confirm if the email you've received is from us or not.

Anything like this should be forwarded (as an attachment if at all possible) to abuse@trademe.co.nz

They take phishing very seriously and have guys working 24/7 to get these sites closed down.

These phishing emails have been going on for a number of weeks. Some of them look very convincing. I think it is a good reason for companies not to include clickable links in their emails, as it can sometimes be very difficult to know whether it is legitimate or not.

There are some really poor ones like you described. But I saw a very convincing one about a month ago. Still the vunerable in our society wouldn't know the difference.

You could startup a scam calling people up and pretending that you are calling on behalf of the government and you are taking donations to stop the economy from taking a dive... I wonder how many people would fall for that.
