Someone sent me this today:

QUOTE: Chainletter:

"Please see what you think and pass it on if you agree with it.

We are hitting $2.15 a litre in some areas now and soon we will be faced with paying $2.50 per litre. So Philip Hollsworth offered this good idea:

This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the 'don't buy petrol on a certain day campaign' that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join in!

Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS - not sellers control the market place. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. Here's the idea:

For the rest of this year DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one) i.e. Mobil and BP.

If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Mobil and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!!

Now, don't wimp out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!

I am sending this note to a lot of people. If all of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)....and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on. By the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it.....

THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all YOU have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all (and not buy at Mobil/BP). How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at either Shell, Gull, Caltex, etc. i.e. Boycott BP and Mobil."

/QUOTE

There could be limited effects, but it all seems arbitrary, and I doubt there is room for the kind of price drop the writer of the message would like to see.

Also, are not many petrol retailers independently owned and operated, and would this action not cause significant parallel damage to employees and part-timers?

This is my issue with these letters that get spread around. If you are putting a small corner station out of business, I doubt the Chain's will really mind, but think about the livelihood of those owners, who in a lot of cases struggle to make much off the fuel as it is. Hence in store groceries being pushed.

At the end of the day, if it is that horrible to pay so much for petrol, explore other options! Scooters, Diesels*, Public Transport, cycling or even walking. If it's an available option. So many complainers driving to and from work, 1 person per vehicle, large engined heavy vehicles.

*Based on the theory they get better mileage and can be arguably cheaper to run, with Diesel and RUC taken into account.

These things are just designed to clog the buggery out of email servers a virus with no code, the content is irrelevant.

Any 'please pass this to 10 people from your contacts' emails are immediately binned

This was sent to me by a real person (they usually are). Are you saying this kind of thing is originated with the intention of clogging email servers? For what purpose?

I always assumed the originators of this kind of thing were misguided at best, and irritating- script-kiddy-type malicious - at worst.

What a waste of time. Margins are slim AFAIK, it's what the crude costs plus the massive government taxes that make it expensive.

I have no problem with the high cost of fuel. It'll force more people onto public transport, which can only be a good thing.

is diesel option cheaper after road user charges and extra servicing costs?

Was thinking about getting a diesel that does 5.6l/1000km. Seems good to me.

Still need to do the math though.

--one thing - road user charges should be removed for vehicles under a certain weight (eg, person passenger vehicles).      It is not like a diesel car damages the road more than a petrol car.

True... RUCs are just a way of the govt getting the tax they miss out on by not taxing diesel the same way as petrol... you really think RUCs go on roads???? :D

This chain letter is being sent around for years. I don't know why people bother with chain letters, chain emails, chains in general...

I've never checked it out, but my belief was that it meant they could tier the tax across different class vehicles and base it on mileage. Particularly to get the trucks for their fair share. Tell me if I'm wrong.

Ah, yes. I searched on some of the text but didn't find anything. Philip Hollsworth gets results tho. I like to put these up so hoax / chain mail references can be easily found.

wreck90 & NzBeagle:

now we're totally off topic... That WAS the idea but if that were the case, trucking companies would own SH1. Considering there is a smaller tax on diesel, and the amount a truck uses per Km compared to a car...

You don't really want my opinion anyway (or that of many owner/drivers, RTF and alot of other trucking organisations), I'm a truck driver :P

Agreed - I see people all the time still wasting the stuff.

Having said that I do have significant concerns about the downstream cost impact that the oil price will have on daily essentials such as food.

Yup.  Now they just have to do something about the high cost of public transport.
