I was driving home through the North Island late the other night and needed coffee - I was tempted by a McDonald's drive-through and boy what a big mistake! Weak watery overheated coffee. It got me thinking, seeing as only petrol stations are open at that late hour, which one would have been my best bet for a good strong cup of coffee in the middle of the night? I know that there are a lot of coffee drinkers here :-)

Haha, yeah it's pretty rough finding a nice coffee from any petrol station

Wildbean are alright...but nothing as good as a cafe in town.

Have you tried the V Iced Coffee? It's actually pretty nice, tastes sort of like the moccona iced coffee, but more milky and with a better energy burst! With no hint of the V taste

If you are heading through Wellington, try Midnight Espresso pretty much anytime, open from 7.30?(I thought it was 7am) - 2.30/3am most mornings :) and usually pretty good. Plus their caramel slice with cream or yoghurt is very tasty!

+1 for Wildbean coffee at BP station. But I think how good the coffee is that depends on who make it...You go to a same store but different staff make different taste...

+1 also from me for Wildbean.

I travel heaps and always stop at BP. Found them pretty consistent myself.

For service station coffee Wildbean all the way, its not great, but its OK, and quite consistent (I believe they have some basic training for all their staff who make coffee). Never going to replace a truly excellent cafe cup, but to be honest they're as good as most cafes around. Haven't been to any other fastfood or service station seller even close to Wildbean (and I've tried a few, being a total coffee nut with a ~4500 coffee set up at home).

Nice!! I think it's time to post a coffee machine thread :)

Still building up my collection of coffee related goods.  Had to put it on hold after my kitchen flooded and the boiler in my last one packed up :S so haven't had a chance to replace it

I had the same thought about starting a coffee geek several times in the last few weeks, after getting a naked portafilter on Ebay about three weeks ago. Will start one now :)

I usually go for Tararua Ice coffee when on the road, but the V ice coffee is not half bad.

Thanks guys - gotta be impressed by a service station chain that trains their staff to make decent coffee. Well done BP!

BP - good coffee and junkfood in the warmer IME, toppers, fake ribs and other nice stuff, and they sell the good stuff for the car too.

For the OP, you need to look for a maccas with the Mc Cafe and it has to be open. the "premium" coffees from the resturant are just crap, would rather have good instant than whatever the hell the machine they have there spits out. I always get a hot chocolate when getting breakfast because that is damn nice ;) extra mashmellows too.

Unfortunately you don't have much choice in the wee hours if you have a craving for a coffee :)
