LiteOn - often Sony hardware, but with many useful little utils for firmware updates, dezoning etc.

sony dru-720a here, was very easy to update to latest firmware... good writer too.... no coasters except for media that actually -looked- dodgy to start with.

Definitly LiteOnIt. The Best you can get these days. Mine Has been going for about 1 1/2 years now. No problems.

1 1/2 years is a long time. I wouldn't assume that any brand is good just because an older version was good. It pays to check a few  review sites and forums to see if the current version you're interested in is still OK. All of the "Brands" are tending to mix and match oems now that the R&D emphasis is moving to higher density recorders like Blu-Ray.
