Weve just heard that NZ Post is costing the government approximatley 40million per year.
Just this evening, the ONE news item showed their pending innovation of self service kiosks....ok great idea, however STOP PRESS and someone call the press cartoonist....  "NZ Post should really launch a teleportation device"... i.e. when your sending mail, just click "attach" <attach your parcel> and hit send.

SIMPLE.

enjoy the weekend.

Kiosks would be amazing, I hate waiting in lines at the post shop.

I wish they would have two lines - one for people who know what they are doing and want to get in and out quickly, the other for people who have no clue / are lonely, and want to talk about their lives and what they are doing for the rest of the day.

/end rant.

Just out of curiosity, why do you refer to it as "loserbank". Im not involved in banking industry, but compelled to know your motivation. IMO ASB is my loser bank!

I am pretty obviously not rischms but I do agree with him/her/it.

Kiwibank is a "loserbank" because it took the socialist government and Dim Jim to start it for third world idiological reasons (dislike of international ownership of any business, especially banks and airlines) when it was not needed. If it was needed then someone cleverer then Dim Jim, Helen and her menagerie of clowns would have started it in an eye blink.

Regarding NZ Post's proposed booths, I know many geeks here are kittygeeks but us older versions do not need to be too long in the canines to remember ticket vending machines that sold stamps off a coil. Very useful when the queues in Post Offices were clogged with people clutching their Post Office Savings books or wanting to conduct other lengthy and apparantly convoluted non core post business. Mmmm, that seems familiar today too, so lets send the core postal business out into the self service street and look after the non core businesses we dabble in order to try and wrangle a buck inside. Could only happen in a government owned organisation.

Respect your views, however politics and polititians aside.... a state owned bank keeps the moolar 'in town' so to speak.
i.e. doesnt go off shore.  International ownership is ok, however if you look at the super economys...they all own quite fair chunk if not all their 'requied assets'.  I think your real problem is that it was a left wing government that decided to implement Kiwibank and put a former Right Wing PM as the chair person.... hmmmm. Would be really cool to know how many right wingers actually voted yes to this when it was 'decided for' in parliment at the time.

Just my thoughts and I guess thats enough of talking about bankers and bankers.

Because a majority of their customers will be always hovering around zero dollars, and they have eliminated fees which is the only way to make money off them, hence it will always loose money.

They lose NZ post money clearly from the dire position that nz post is in now.

Respect your view, but do you have any solid basis for deciding that their customers are poor?  I think you will find the other banks would have the same % of what you refer to as 'zero balancers'. from a previous job, I noticed quite a number of business and private people who had all the sterotypes of having money using kiwibanks cheque books / cards.  Everyone has their own needs in terms of fees and wouldnt you be happy if your bank wasnt charging a fee for everything under the sun and moon?   I think you will find all banks have a zero fees account somewhere in their product portfolio.

NZ post however was always destined to loose money as the internet / email became more and more evolved. simple logic there and nothing unexpected.

Kiwibank will make some money for NZ Post from Home Loans/International transactions, non Kiwibank customer use of their ATMs etc etc.

They have gone out of their way to attract that sort of customer and then reward them by not charging reasonable fees on their day to day activities.

We have Kiosks in the UK. It allows you do anything from post a parcel to buying stamps.
saves waiting in line behind Doris, who wants to chat.

Apologies, I see where we differ - I don't regard the likes of China, Burma, North Korea, failed african states, etc as the super economies that you must be holding up as examples. In which case you are correct. Is also typical of dictators to want to own banks and airlines - the first for the money and the second for the image.

It is widely accepted in advanced economies that the role of governments is regulating banking systems not owning them (except temporarily in the case of necessity in which case they are in a super hurry to get rid of them again). Of course it is very attractive to some to be both an owner of a bank and to also be the regulator all of one's competitors.

Kiwibank is a dog and could only exist under government ownership as a funded entity - again older geeks and financial historians will remember the fate of the PSIS which operated the same "for loser's" model. One day all its members found their funds locked away for a few years, it didn't work.

NZ Post should concentrate on its core business (delivery) and if that business is not viable or it cannot work out how to make it viable then it should modify/shrink itself to suit.  Stamp vending machines and booths sound wonderful to me. Else perhaps they could get into power generation, buy an airline, start some supermarkets...?

Wrong.  The announcement of the loss was very specific in that the money was lost by the retail arm.  Kiwibank is a separate entity and if it had been the cause of the loss, it would have been explicitly stated.  Retail simply means that their shops and such are losing more money than they earn.  Rather than simply making stuff up to match your viewpoint, you could read the annual report yourself (2010/2011 won't be available for a few months yet, that report is 2009/2010).

I rarely use an actual Post offices for their services. The agency branches in many book stores work better for me, they seem to have more counter staff that are across a multitude of things.

And as for the folk who want to have a chat, if the good people behind the counter are friendly and nice... it brings their customers back. I think it's the good part of Customer Service some of us forget, and others think there is no reason for.
But one day (perhaps when you've reached your four score years and ten use by date) you impatient folk may appreciate that someone took the time to solve your problem in a friendly and personal way.

If you can't find a few minutes in the occasional day that you may need to stand in a queue to talk to a real person, as a species we're not heading for a very community friendly and cohesive future......
