I have recently noticed that when I drive about the city (Wellington) at ceratin spots a strange buzz-clicking sound comes out of the car's radio speakers .... a sort of 'Tzzzicker, tzzzicker, tzzzicker', usually in bursts of three.

This also only seems to happen when I have my mobile phone in the car.

Can anyone shed light on this phenomenon?

It happens when entering the southern portal of Terrace Tunnel, when entering the motorway off Tinakori Road (heading north), and a couple other spots around town.

Maybe interference from those Transit NZ signs, or the pole-mounted cameras?

GSM will cause speakers that aren't shielded to react to texts and calls being made, and possibly just communication with the cell tower.
It can be a beeping or a buzzing, depending on how close the phone is to the speaker.

I get the beeping all the time from my iPhone...yet noone else in the office with iPhones has that happen to them....

I get these when the phone is plugged in and charging next to the computer. I can always tell when the phone is connecting to the network and/or receiving signals. I can tell when a txt or phone call is coming a couple of seconds before the phone actually rings.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

As explained... It can be just the mobile handset using more power to find other cell sites around, some signaling happening, etc.

Nothing strange. It doesn't happen on 3G networks. If you are on Telecom XT and set your handset to 3G only, not only you will save battery, you won't hear these "old network" noise.

try wrapping it in tin foil. That should stop the alien ship from tracking you.

Oh,I'd already made a tin foil hat, now I'm laying sheets over the house!!

BTW, my mobile is TelstraClear ... which uses Vodafone's network if I am not mistaken.

What's life without a few beepps and buzzes, huh? I'm in Palmerston North today and no noises at all during the drive up or around this ciity ... maybe the aliens are too busy drilling holes in Massey's cow herd? .

Seriously, the FM in my car went dead on Tuesday afternoon as I drove along Thorndon Quay from the Railway Station to the Motorway underpass.

Modern houses have tinfoil embedded in the walls (which screws cell reception), so you only need to do the windows.

My house is over 100 years old and only just had ceiling and underfloor insulation installed, so the walls are probably filled with copies of Truth.

Good idea regarding windows though, although I'll probably go broke considering each is about 1m X 2.5M ... still, the Galactic Overlords won't get to me, ha ha ha ha ha .............

How much difference has the insulation made? It was massive for my place! Do a heat pump next, they're awesome. I'm not sure wall insulation is worth the bother, unless you happen to be relining it anyway. I have the stuff they inject into the wall, and it helped a little, not a lot. Retrofit/magnetic double glazing was awesome, got rid of my bedroom window condensation problems, but choose your vendor really carefully.

Foil lined Gib was a bad idea and stopped being used in the 90's.
