Setup a FTP server using Filezilla and issue passwords :)
Can also rate limit them that way

thanks for your reply, does this still go through windows explorer? or do i have to install software on everyone elses laptops too?

You can just use a browser to access it.

your computer would need the ftp server installed. but they would still be able to access it via windows explorer....Tho thats not the preferred way to browse ftp's

option 2 is setting up user access rights. a LOT more work, but wouldnt require anything at there end, or any extra programs installed.

the FTP server would be easiest

Filezilla server is fairly straight forward to setup.....

For end users accessing you, they just need your IP and username/password you make for them.
They then just use IE (or FTP client if so wish), and browse to ftp://yourip/ (or ftp://yourip:portnumber if you decide to use a different port from the normal port 21 FTP uses)

weezo and filezilla both look great ! about to get stuck into them now, but one more question. will it still be LAN transfer speed? or will it use their internet cap and be limited to the speed of the internet. here we get 12mbps lan speed and 400kbps download during the day (faster at night). cheers

Long as they use your LAN IP to connect, it should be LAN traffic at full speed unless you rate limit them via the Filezilla server. But in saying that, get a few users on a gigabit LAN leehcing off you and they will all start to get slower speeds, the pipes only so big :)

Weezo is instant, well it feels that way when I transfer files from over the lan. It was a pain to setup in Windows 7 though, WinXP it was all done after install. Win 7 I had to get someone from geekzone to help me through configuring.

Start a DC Hub,

http://www.ynhub.org/ for the server

and get them to install http://sourceforge.net/projects/icedc/

That way you can password protect the hub and each user can share between themselves

Forgot about DC even tho we tend to run it at our LANs...or used to.

Always had an odd issue with it where everyone would be getting great speeds except 1 user. Usually me... I even swapped hardware, software, OS etc and still had issues. People could leech off me at full speed but I couldnt get anything over 300k. Then it might work for a few hours and someone else would have the issue.

Tend to just use Windows sharing these days.... seems to be more reliable with Teracopy installed.
