I think someone needs their head red for changing the rules.

A week ago I secured my British passport and it was much easier than I thought. I got my JP to sign and it lasts for 11 years. Moving on to my NZ Passport and it only lasts 5 years and you need to get your photo signed by someone with a current NZ Passport. You cannot use a JP or Doctor anymore.

What if you didn't know anyone with a current passport? 4 of the first people I asked had either lost or it had expired.

Renewed Aussie passport here 2 years ago. Filled in the form & got the new photo, got a JP signature, took the lot to the Consulate in Auckland (no queue), paid my money and handed the old one in with the application. Two days later the old and the new one arrived in the mail (valid 10 years, cheaper than my wife's NZ one which she just renewed which is yes, 5 years). Done.

iPad Pro 11" + iPhone 15 Pro Max + 2degrees 4tw!

You don't actually need to get your photo signed by a referee anymore. You just need their details, including their passport number.

You also don't have to send your old passport in with your renewal application anymore either.

Yep, 5 years is ridiculous and nothing more than a money grab. There was a bit about it the other day here http://www.nzherald.co.nz/opinion/news/article.cfm?c_id=466&objectid=10745359

You'll find that most countries are moving towards 5 years lifespan for passport these days... It's not uncommon to have 5 years validity in many countries.

I prefer the new system. In the past I found it a real hassle getting an official signature.
