You probably know that a current scam is for someone to take hold of an email or IM account and try to pass a story about being robbed while overseas, asking for money to pay hotel and return home...

So I just got pinged via IM by a "friend" who is "in Scotland" and need to come back. Because he contacted me via Facebook the scammer was even able to drop some names - like my friend's wife's name.

If you missed a previous report of a "phone sales scam" check this old thread.

Here's a transcription of my conversation:

"Friend" says
Hello
How are you doing?

Mauricio Freitas says
Good... And you?

"Friend" says
Not good here
Just experienced my worst trip ever!

Mauricio Freitas says
What is going on?

"Friend" says
Stranded in Scotland United Kingdom as we speak!
We came here unannounced on a short trip, unfortunately for us we got robbed

Mauricio Freitas says
Oh wow. That's bad!
How's the trip so far. That is, before the robbery?

"Friend" says
It was going on fine
Everything we had on us were stolen away including cash, credit cards and phones!

Mauricio Freitas says
Fuck. So you can't contact anyone at work?

"Friend" says
At all, that is why I am contacting you
Mauricio Freitas says
Ok.

"Friend" says
I really need your help getting back home now please
It was a terrible experience, but thank God we still have our life and passports saved!

Mauricio Freitas says
Praise The Lord!

"Friend" says
Wife was brutally injured, she is getting treatment at a local hospital now
Please we need your help getting back home now

Mauricio Freitas says
Ok... You are in Scotland now?
Do you want me to ask someone from the Embassy to meet you?

"Friend" says
No
Our return flight leaves in few hrs time, but I am having troubles settling the hotel bills here
Cancelled all our cards and will not get a new card number until we get back home
Please I need you to loan me few $$$ to settle the bills and also get a cab down to the Airport

Mauricio Freitas says
If you have an American Express you can call their Amex Travel Services office in Glasgow and they can make an emergency payment to the hotel.

"Friend" says
Been to the Police and embassy here, but they arent helping issues
I will surely refund it tomorrow as soon as I get back home....I promise
Trust me

Mauricio Freitas says
Ok.
I trust you!

"Friend" says
Needing 1,500 , but will appreciate whatever you can spare

Mauricio Freitas says
1,500 in what current? NZ dollars, US dollars or GB pounds?

"Friend" says
Pounds
I will surely refund it tomorrow....I promise

Mauricio Freitas says
Ok, just a minute, checking something here in the online banking.

"Friend" says
It is safer and faster if you have it wired to my name and present location through Western Union
I will get the money picked up with my passport to present as an ID
Do you know any WU store nearby?

Mauricio Freitas says
Oh, I can't do this via Internet Banking?
Cool, found www.westernunion.co.nz

"Friend" says
OK

Mauricio Freitas says
And yes, they do have an office here.

"Friend" says
Ok
Thank you so much
How soon can you get it done?

Mauricio Freitas says
Probably can send in next 15 minutes, if I get into the car soon.

"Friend" says
These is all you need in sending the money via Western Union

Name: "Friend"
Location: 196 St Vincent Str, Glasgow, G2 5NT, Scotland(United Kingdom)
Got it?

Mauricio Freitas says
Sure.

"Friend" says
Please can you send me an email with the WU details - [something]@live.com
While I rush out to get our things ready to leave

Mauricio Freitas says
Before I send this money though...

"Friend" says
Trust me

Mauricio Freitas says
Oh, I trust you "Friend"

"Friend" says
If I wasn't the one, I will not ask you to wire money to my name as you and I know i will be needing an identification (My Passport) to identify myself before getting the money at the bank here
Please do not have any doubt as i understand how you feel

Mauricio Freitas says
Just need to make sure you have tickets, documents, everything you need? Because might need something else, and not have time to send it later?

"Friend" says
I will give you a call as soon as we get to the Airport
I have everything with me....
All I need is just settle the hotel bills and leave for the Airport
Thank you so much for your care
I owe you a lot
Ok?

Mauricio Freitas says
Is your wife Sue {pretending I didn't know the name} ok?

"Friend" says
[Wife name]

Mauricio Freitas says
Ooops, sorry.
The folks at Vodafone will be worried when I tell them later today...

"Friend" says
Trust me!

I then told him this was a waste of time, he is a dirty scumbag scammer - and he went offline.

I did a Find/Replace of the actual name to "Friend" to PROTECT THE INNOCENT.

Also, this is another reason why people should not install every single stupid Facebook application they see.

I started laughing at "Praise The Lord!"

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

OOOHHHH HYPERFIBRE!

Hahahahahah.
Yeah, I've had a few that have asked me to wire them money through WU. It's easy to see if they are scamming you if you ask "is your %makeuprandomnamehere% okay?" They normally say yeah she/he is fine.

Yes, but in this case since the guy got into a Facebook account he knew exactly the wife's name, where my friend works, where he lives, etc...

A gold mine for scammers.

Also worth noting I was adding some pauses between the sentences. Asking for time to check internet banking. Then spending some time "searching" for WU offices, and so on.

Anything to waste his time.

I recently got spammed from a mate's Messenger contact. He wanted me to take an IQ test!
I asked him what his favourite sports team was, he said he was going to take a shower. I asked him what time it was there, knowing he's in Brisbane, no reply, so my last message to him was "F--k off dickwad. Get a life and stop spoiling life for others. I bet your mother would love to know what you're up to, or are you too ashamed to tell her?"

Jerks.
