So took the forester into get a warrant on saturday, i knew it was going to fail but atleast i would know what on. I was suspecting the front right to get the fail and maybe some new brake pads.. The results came in and i was floored. Not 1 new tyre but 4.. oh bugger!
Untill now ive been getting by on second hand tyres from ex lease cars which has been ok but every second wof i would need to get a new tyre. Well im over that now, im thinking its time to go and buy some new ones and maybe get a couple of years out of them instead of 1 if im lucky.

So ive been hunting around and trademe has a good deal on some slightly dubious tyres from such brands as Sunny and Altenzo in the $150 price bracket (225/50/17), i realise these are going to be noisy Chinese made tyres, which dosnt bother me so much, just after something that will get me from a to b safely, and will last a reasonable amount of time.

Obviously having to buy 4 tyres at once is going to dent the wallet quite well so im after that magical combination of cheap & good, im guessing i can probably choose one or the other and that theres isnt such a thing as cheap and good with tyres lol. Has anyone had experiences with these tyres?

The alternatice is some GT radial Champiro 228's which i can get for $255 a tyre.. yep an extra $100 on the Chinese made quality.

Thoughts / opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Edit: Just day to day driving, with the odd medium distance highway driving (300km)

The boss put Altenzo's on the back of my work car and I actually really like them. Seem a little quieter than the Bridgestones they replaced. Will probably be putting them on the front when they wear down.

Before I sold my last car ('99 Caldina GTT), it needed 4 new tyres so I put a set of really cheap Chinese ones on (Yellow Sea). They were really, truely horrible. It felt like the car had wet jandals on!

I'm personally against buying second hard tyres or retreads. Not worth the risk especially when driving on the open road. Why compromise on the only thing that's holding you onto the road?

Any idea on wear? How long have they been on and whats the state of them now?

Ive seen the light, i will never  go down the second hand / retread  route again

The cheapest one Consumer recommends in the 215/60R16 size (which I think your car has) is

GT Radial Champiro 228 (73%), price: $198

They're only slightly behind the performance of tyres that cost $50 more.

So yeah it's going to cost you $800 for tyres, if you want a quality product. Tyres on my little car last ages, 3-4 years, but I don't drive all that much these days. It still cost me $600 for tyres though. I got the insurance too, costs about $12/tyre (though they often discount that if asked), and because of that got one $150 tyre replaced free recently, by Tonys.

You can't fault the service at Tonys either. I had a voucher for a wheel alignment out in Porirua, but it would've cost more for the time off to take it out than I would've saved in the alignment. Tonys took the voucher and matched the price after I mentioned it... I didn't expect them to!

i just had to replace my 4 tyres which are slightly bigger at 225/45 18 but the cheapest i could find were through Beaurepaires, and they were brand new Hankook's at $240.00 a tyre, which are a lot cheaper than the Yokohamas they replaced

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I have aftermarket rims on, the size is 225/50/17. Ive been looking at those tyres and tyre general can do them for $255 at my rim size, so im looking at a bit over $1k for tyres plus an alignment, its a huge expense thats come out of the blue.
We get the tonys tyre service ads here and just looked online and the closest is in Christchurch (350km from me here in Blenheim)

It shouldn't really be a surprise. You buy cheap tyres, they wear out. Maybe you should go with original rims, to save money.

So many people treat tyres as an inconvieniant expense that the needs to be dealt with as cheaply as possible
They are the no1 most important part of your car. Crap tyres means less control.

I cannot understand how people cannot notice worn or under inflated tyres, I do a visual check every time I walk to my car.
I would be steering well clear of cheap chinese tyres off trademe or anywhere!
If you cannot afford proper 17" tyres fit more appropriate rims. I think you will find your car nicer to be in with 15" wheels as well.

The money isnt really a problem, i have it but when your saving for an O.E, a $1000 hit is a bit of a step back. The question was simple, will i get away with the cheapo's or am i better to step up and pay more. So far one person commented on the Altenzo's and said they are reasonable and the others have said go for something better which is what im thinking now too, just waiting to hear back from some other tyre shops to see what they can do.
Why tyre websites can't have their prices on the site is beyond me, the majority make you email them for a quote and then take a couple of days to respond Undecided

Most will better a quote by X amount. So shop around, get written quotes from each.

Definitely go for better tyres from a good brand.
How long they last will depend on several things.
how you drive
the type of tyre.
the size you need is a sport size so they will be grippier, grippier = faster wearing.
So life will depend on your driving.

I read somewhere that the markup on tyres is massive, they can do huge discounts and still make a profit. It may have been in consumer.

It's a pretty cut throat market. Especially in bigger centres.

We don't really know if it is or not. Since they say they'll always beat a competitors quote, without knowing what it is, the margin must be pretty healthy.

I always thought would you buy a cheap or 2nd hand motorcycle helmet - being the thing that protects your head in an accident? If not, then why buy cheap tires which are the things that keep you on the road....

me = 8 years in car industry, trust me competition is fierce in tyres.
I don't know what the exact margins are, but a lot of things in the car market are a much lower markup than you would think. Having said that there are plenty where is much much higher than you would think!
