Just watched the tail end of the story for Kiwi's in Australia. It got me thinking; does this apply to all other nations? For example with the family who has the child with a Disability. But do these rules apply to British Citizens?

If so, then what's the problem? I only see an issue if they are solely discriminating against Kiwi's.

Everyone will be judged or discriminated against at some point. No law is going to change that. Its a fact of life. I'm not endorsing it but it happens.

Seemed to me to be a lame sob story about a bunch of people with weak or very common skills moved to a highly seasonal tourist area in Australia (Brisbane) who were then * surprised* they couldn't find regular work.

No engineers, geologists, tradespeople who moved to say Perth were featured.... funny that...

I had to laugh at the woman that applied for 650 jobs before some sucker hired her.

I think the argument from Kiwi's side of things is that if the same thing happened to an aussie in NZ they would get government support. Aussie changed their policy in that regard ages ago (2001?) maybe it is time NZ also stopped the handouts to foreigners. I had to chuckle when they asked Quade Cooper if he was an Aussie citizen and he said he "didn't know". If the story is correct very few NZ'ers get Aussie citizenship, even after living and contributing to their economy for years.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

The issue is that Kiwis dont need to get a visa to go to Australia, Brits do, and a Brit on a work visa would be classed as a resident regarding medical care, whereas a Kiwi without a visa (the so called "special category Visa") is not eligible.

This whole thing blew up after the the mid 90s when a favourite media topic in OZ was kiwi dole bludgers in Bondi, and latterly the gold coast.- It caused the OZ Govt to get NZ to agree to the OZ government no classing kiwis as permanent residents.

The purpose was to stop benefit bludging, but because of the way that other benefits ( medical and emergency) are administered, it captures a much wider group of payments, - i.e. flood relief etc
