Funny you should ask, a new (just today I think) fireworks store opened up on Albert Street. It looks like they've some pretty good, authentic stuff, not that mass produced garbage but then I'm no fireworks expert ;)
Dont know if they still supply them after the drug hoo-ha, but SOG used to get good ones - old neighbour worked for them and bought home awesome ones :)
Man I wish you could still buy double happies and thunderbangers or just crackers. All banned. I was brought up on a farm as a kid come guyfawkes I had enough ammo to blow up a chicken run, usually round a thousand or more crackers combined with doublehappies, thunderbangers (big bad crackers good for blowing up frogs) and my anti air skyrockets. Then us kids from the community would all meet up in a paddock while the parents barbecued steaks and drank beer. Us kids were ready to act out world war II. Rocket launchers (Skyrockets in vacuum pipes) firing from all directions, chucking crackers at each other damn good fun not one during those years ever got hurt. You never heard of people getting burnt or serious injured back then. Now the fun is gone what is the point of standing round a bonfire watching lovey bright colors of sparkies or the bloomflower the beautiful beautiful bloomflower how lovely. Bring back the thunder bangers and the skyrockets.

Ive got some video footage of a new years spectacular our SOG neighbour put on.... was damn impressive. Will get it onto YouTube one of these days.....
SOG have them again. Saw one in Manukau with big advertising for fireworks. Miss the ones you could get in SA. Its one of the very very few things I miss about SA actually. Bottle rockets, widow makers (double happy sized thing you could strike off a matchbox). There was a really big one I cant recall the name of which was about the size of my middle finger that you lit off a matchbox. Could disintegrate a letterbox. Was awesome as it was waterproof and so you could set them off in the pool or a stream. Lots of fun chucking them in the water under our cousins rope swing on their farm.

TheUngeek: I miss having access to my mates old mans gunpowder.... Bored teens with gun powder. What could possibly go wrong?
Can remember going into the shed and finding my brother smashing bullet primers on dads bench with a hammer, not far away was a bullet press with gun powder galore amazed he didn't blow himself up.
I recall our neighbour used to give their kids $200 each to spend on fireworks, we were poor and got $10 packs, . They had a bonfire one GF and we were invited, they kept sneaking out of the shed they were holed up in and throwing entire packs of double happy's at us. I got sick of it, and took 2 tied together, snuck up beside the shed, lit my ones and threw them through the open door of the shed. There was an almighty double bang, followed a few seconds later by another, and another and another, 20 seconds later 3 kids came out of that shed like Satan was chasing them. Took 2 hours for all the fireworks in that shed to stop going off :) (it also burned to the ground)
$600 in fireworks gone. I was unpopular with my neighbours, not only for a waste of $600 of fireworks, but for the hiding that the kids got for throwing fireworks at us, which started the entire thing.
I miss sky rockets, I really wish I could find something equally good, esp in Mt Roskill, or City.
I also miss Bonfire's. I would love to find a farm that would let me hire a paddock and some of their waste wood to have one. If anyone knows of one, let me know!
Big thanks to all the suggestions about going to switched on gardener. Got a sizeable pack, went to a mates BBQ last night and mine was by far the best of the group. Converted most of the people there to going to SOG next year.
I wish I had managed to get some, shame they sell them only 3 days a a year, I was so damn busy this weekend! I had hoped to get something for my two year old to appreciate.
