I have just read lots of articles about Rena and the clearance of containers but none of them seem to say what will be done once they are all removed. Does the ship just get left on the reef and break up under the forces of nature, or will she be cut up and the pices sunk or taken to Tauranga, or what?

Sometimes I just sit and think. Other times I just sit.

In the first instance they will try and drag her off the reef. If that fails it will be time to get out the blow torch and start cutting.

There is no way the ship will be left there to rust away.

It'll still be a'ways off yet. There are a lot of containers inside the vessel which also have to be removed

There is some idea proposed to sink it nearby as a recreational diving attraction. Still needs a lot of work.

The steel is worth a lot of money btw

What are the current estimates for removing all the containers?

I hope they have cleaned the tanks, they may have pumped out the oil (that they can) but I hope the have pumped in some dispersant so the last few liter don't dribble out.

What will happen to the hulk? If there is no money in saving it, it will be dumped, the water there is deep and it's already marked as a navigation hazard area.

It'll stay there until the next inorganic rubbish collection, then they drag it to the curb and wait for some people to pull up in a van and take the metal.

It could still be a year before it gets to that stage. For those old enough to remember the the Wahine ferry , that was on it's side off the Wellington coast for several years while it was cut up. The technology today however may make it an easier job.
