I've bought some cheap ones before but 1/3 or more didn't burn well so they weren't actually that cheap after all :P

Everyone from the Warehouse to New World stocks blank discs but I never remember to compare prices when I'm in there. Where do you buy yours from?

I don't buy cheap disc as I want the data on them to last!

The dyes in the cheap disc tend to start to degrade after only a year (or less if not kept under ideal storage conditions)

Last lot I bought were Verbatum's and I got them online from Ascent.

I dont hold to that theory about the dye... Ive got some cheap DVDs that were burnt back in 2000/2001 and theyre still working fine :)

Taiyo Yuden FTW. They can be sold under many different brands.

I have found the sony and mitsubishi disks have laminated and the top surface flaking off after about 10 years. Imation and tdk seem to have performed better. I have found imation to be the best lower priced disk. I do have some archival disks which cost about $10 each in the 90's, which are over ten years old are still fine. These days however I backup on harddrives due to data being so cheap.

True - there is cheap ($) and cheap (nasty). But your early comment was that it was a theory - are you now suggesting it is more than a theory? ;)

Verbatim DVD+R's - never had a coaster. $27.60 for a 50 pack spindle from PB tech.

No but your post implied all cheap discs were rubbish. :)

True... my bad. I should have been explicit that cheap quality = bad. (Sometimes cheap cost does = cheap quality, but not always)

+1 for the Diskshop.

Don't buy cheap if you want to keep them more than a few months. Go for something like Verbatim or better still Taiyo Yuden but they will cost..

Last time I tried to buy printable CDs HN didn't sell them, and won't again, Noels didn't sell them, got some from Dick Smith, home brand (?!). Getting tricky to find. That discshop link looks good, thanks.

I find Verbatim and Imation reliable. For important disks I use taiyo yuden disks, reputed to be the best in the world. They're a bit hard to get in NZ, but not impossible.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation
