Hi,

A theroictcal question to ask... I got offered a months work in Brisbane by an NZ based firm. I have NZ residency so would I have have to become an employee for them to employ me on a very short term basis to get me across the Tasman  /  could I have contracted to them without having to get a visa to work in Oz?

Thanks

You say you have "NZ residency" - if by that you mean that you are a NZ Resident (i.e. not a NZ Citizen) then you cannot work in or even visit Australia without applying for a visa prior to departure.

If you are  NZ Citizen (so you are entitled to a NZ Passport) then you do not have to apply for a visa prior to departure to visit or work in Australia, you just take yourself and your passport and go and do it. But even so you may still be refused entry at the border if you are an undesirable alien e.g. have a criminal record, or likely to be a liability in which case you should apply for a visa prior to departure.
