So I dropped and killed a 750GB portable hard drive the other day. I logged onto DSE to take a look for a replacement before I talk to the guy who orders out stuff. Unless its my memory fading the prices seem to have gone up. Drives that were selling for $120 a few months ago have jumped up to $199.

Is this due to drive shortages from the Thailand floods? Or just a pre-Xmas price gouge?

Yep. Although personally I would have used a life jacket. Or a gold bar, depending on what I was trying to achieve.

Dang looks like I will have to wait a bit then - or determine how much work is willing to pay.

Seems like Warehouse Stationery havent put up their prices but as a result they are sold out :(

You could be waiting a while as they have said that delays in manufacture could continue well into next year.

I can tell you there's not much sitting with distributors either at present. Lots of stuff on back order.

Yip, def gone up due to the floods,

a WD elements 2TB was specialing at around $149 a few months ago at the big box stores, now it is over $200 at all of them,

I posted a thread last week or so that Norman Ross had a stock of 2TB drives for not too much.

If I were you, I'd get in there and see if they do still, I doubt you'll find any cheaper anywhere, because as others have pointed out, the supply is thin on the ground for smaller retailers, while the big box stores will be burning through their own internal stock piles.

My wholesaler told me last week that other dist's are buying portable stock from DSE in the thousands and taking them out of the cases to on sell to customers.

I was warned 3 months ago.

If you can get disks then do. In 3 months they may be an earner on Trademe.

SSD - yes, but manufacture will have to ramp up, which I'm sure they're doing.

The Jap quakes was also an issue as I understand it.

estimated shortage is around 19,000,000 units? I remember reading it somewhere. A lot of the price increases are due to suppliers making it a safe price, to slow demand. They may struggle to get more stock and also I read somewhere ages ago that Dell have rights over all hard drives. As in, they can get a hard drive over anyone else if they need it for their computers sold via the online store.

warranty is void once unit is removed from the case. But as stated by Don, everyone is doing it. I have for my 2 seagate 1tbs, no way will i pay over $150 for a 1tb

Warehouse stationery do have stock, not sure about the online store, but they have stock in there stores. If your local store is out of stock they can transfer one in for you. They do have a limit of 1 per customer though.
