The Sound has been broadcasting for about a week now, replacing Solid Gold. If you listen to The Sound, what do you think of it,  vs the old Solid Gold?
Personally I am liking the music a lot better, and they play a lot of stuff that the other stations don't play anymore.

There was no AT40 (Kasey Kasem) on Sunday morning, but given that was the first day of the new station, and it was a holiday, they may have chosen different programming.

Personally I don't like "The Sound". I liked the oldies music, as it gave me an opportunity to [re]discover old music which I didn't grow up listening to regularly. The '80s creeping in to the mix is disappointing, as it's mostly the same old stuff I already have in my collection.

I actually have not found AT40 on Sundays for about 4 weeks now.

I assumed they might have lost their sponser (John Sweetman's B & B in Auckland).

Try as I might I could not find an email address for Solid Gold to ask them and nor can I find a logical one for the Sounds either.

I'm gutted to be honest. I LOVED Solid Gold esp the AT40, the Saturday night Jukebox and Macca! I can see how some folk may like 80s music but I always felt that there were enough stations playing that genre.

I tried the Sound for a couple of days but have settled on a new internet station. Gone from 12-14 hours listening  a day to zero in six days. :)

I keep thinking "New Coke!" but can't think why. Lol.

I've found that the music on Solid Gold has been changing for a while now. Soetime late last year they starting bringing in newer music. At the same time a few of the other radio stations seemed to change a bit too (The Rock/Hauraki). I don't really like listening to the radio that much but The Sound will still figure in the rotation I think.

From a Geeky perspective, programming aside, this is one of two stations transmitting syncronously in Auckland and the Waikato..
The two transmitters are phase locked and modulation timed to GPS and indeed it is pretty seamless listening right through one region to the other...

Hmm, I guess we've lost our unmetered via Telstraclear.

I gave up on Solid Gold a while ago, it went TOO old for a while, but I did notice it improved a lot a month or two ago. Quite enjoying The Sound -- just listening to Jethro Tull, U2, can't complain about that mix.

Although I see that the baby boomer ads are still there -- one of the great things about baby boomer radio is that they take me back to my youth, I don't need to be reminded every five minutes that most of my bodily functions don't work anymore...

I don't  mind it.

Actually I found myself listening it for a few hours at a time, the most I've listend to a music station in quite some while.

It's a huge plus that they seem to be playing full length versions of songs, rather then edited versions for singles (I think the other day I heard a version of 'Money for Nothing' with a longer guitar solo) and they included the 'fade back in' part when they played Strawberry Fields Forever.

it will be interesting to see if they delve a little deeper than the handful of tracks from an artist that get played all the time on classic rock stations - for example, there's far more to The Who than the songs that have been used as CSI themes!

I miss Channel Z though - especially the format that Wellington Channel Z had - a good mix of contemporary alt-rock and 80s/90s stuff like The Smiths, Stone Roses, The Cure etc...

Whats the other? Mind you I havent really listended to the radio on the drive to the tron since they lost the coverage on 89.8 over the hill, and as it was the only station that had put in the effort to set up RDS (even if they are not to spec with the constantly cycling PS meaning my presets get renamed to parts of artist names or songs etc)

I never bothered with the others as you have no bloody clue what they are on when driving so just flip over to the SD card of music.

Sounds like they are pushing the levels a little high, not up there with edge and zm however.

And I would have thought they would bother to update the PS and text, still saying SGOLD AK and RIGHT SONG RIGHT NOW.. Ah well.
