Short story is that our car went infor a WOF few months back and failed due to leaking shock - so got both front shocks replaced. They found front right shock mount was dodgy as well so replaced it as well.

Seemed OK for a while but then started making odd noise on the right hand side whenever we turned left sharply - like a "thunk" followed by bit of a rattle - took it back, they couldnt replicate issue but found another issue with brakes, was causing another noise we had heard (almost like somehting was loose) - brakes worked better and all noises went away again.... for a while.

Now the "thunk, rattle" noise is back (can replicate it every time on one particular corner) and the other noise is slowly creeping back in too, mainly hear it when on rough roads.

Im wondering if the shock mount they put in is stuffed (they did admit it was a 2nd hand one) but they are reluctant to look at it, theyre convinced its something else but have not yet actually dropped the shock out again to check everything.

Anyone got any ideas what it could be ?

Im tossing up wether to take it back to the original shop or bite the bullet and go elsewhere for another opinion to get it done once and for all.

We want to go away in a few weeks but dont want to take the car on a road trip if its making these noises the whole way. (Car has passed another WOF in past 3 weeks and no mention made of any shock/suspension issues)

Forgot to mention, it mainly makes the "thunk, rattle" when turning left on an incline.

Maybe if you stop going around corners like a rally driver, the noise might stop too?

Perhaps consider another mechanic. Just for another opinion? It's hard to diagnose without actually driving the car and also having a look at the problem first hand.

Internet car diagnosis is rather tricky! Those noises you describe could be many things. If not the shock mount I'd be checking the sway bar links.
It is feasible that the 2nd hand mount is poked. The are usually a bearing mounted in rubber. The bearing can fail/wear and the rubber can perish and/or separate from the steel.
Being a 2nd hand mount fitted at least 6 months ago (going by the 2 WOFs) you will not have any claim on that. It's the risk you take with 2nd hand parts like that.

If you are otherwise happy with the garage I see no reason not to go back there.

WOF is not a guarantee of safety.

Btw, did they use a second hand mount without discussing it with you first?

I'm assuming it is an upper mount, correct?

I recently drove a commercial van which was riding low on the right front side. An untrained home mechanic had not correctly adjusted/reinstalled the torsion bar after replacing a shock absorber. (but it still got a warrant) After the correct adjustment by someone who knew what they were doing, there was still a clunking noise. This was later resolved by replacing the wishbone/swingarm. Not 100% sure here but the mechanic explained something like the clunking cause was a worn mounting of some kind on the swingarm/wishbone end. I have a feeling it was not the lower shock mounting.

Sounds very much like a CV joint to me.  They can go for ages like that  (you learn to ignore the noise).  They are not a WOF item so generally get ignored. It's only when it starts making a noise when going straight, that you know it;s getting serious and needs replacing.  I had similar on one of my Maxda Estima last year.  Garage said not to worry so I drove it for another 8000 ks before getting it replaced as it was started to annoy me.  Previous to that my other car a Nissan Primera had the same same problem for nearly 12 months before i got it replaced.  Believe me, if this is what it is, it sounds a lot worse than it actually is.  I am suprised your garage hasn't done the simple test of driving the car round in a tight circle. Best way to confirm it.   To relace it about $200 - $300. Funny thing is, if the boot cover  (this is a rubber sleive that protects the CV joint) gets cracked, your car will fail a WOF but CV joint can be as noisy as hell and they don't worry. Makes no sense to me.

Pretty sure its not CV, they dont tend to rattle and turning a corner dosent always generate the noise, 90% of the time its on an incline.

Hopefully find out early next week when its back at the garage (again).
