I really fee sorryl for the person who bought it :(

http://www.groupy.co.nz/deals/1483?trk_campaign=email&trk_medium=dealEmail&trk_item_id=1483

5" GPS OEM non-brand Unit for $159 and save $357 (RRP $516)

Same thing or better for $90 USD = $114 NZD. http://www.dealextreme.com/p/6-lcd-windows-ce-6-0-core-500mhz-gps-navigator-w-fm-transmitter-built-in-4gb-memory-usa-map-37914

Do people even think and search before trully trust that site?

Really insane :(

It's probably worth the extra few dollars to the average non-techie to not have to screw around with a cheap Chinglish gadget trying to load NZ maps on it (since it comes with US maps loaded). I know *my* time is worth more than that.

But in general I agree: most of the one day deals are rubbish.

@SaltyNZ units sold are pretty much same (different screen size) and loaded with iGo.'

I think I've seen AU & NZ maps loaded on GPS Units on dealextreame.

I've just picked first one I saw on dealextreame as popular option.

Ah, well in that case I agree 100%. They rely on people's inability to think when presented with a time-critical decision to suck people in.

Occasionally a worthwhile one comes up, mostly food or accommodation related (although the accommodation type ones can also be found on the travel websites for the same prices) and I get those. Groupon has a meat pack for $59 in Auckland this morning.

Lamentably, our local butcher in Warkworth, who used to do similar size meat packs for a similar price (~$120) has been sold and the new owner doubled his prices. We'll see how long that lasts, especially since the previous owners only moved a block down the street to the local New World. Anyway, the 'normal' price of that particular one looks about right, and $59 is a good deal, so I got that one.

Doubly-lamentably, anyone who puts a genuinely good deal out with GroupOn risks putting themselves out of business.

But normally, they all go straight to the trash without even opening.

PS - don't blame me, my wife signed me up. :-D

I laughed when I saw this - what I find most surprising is the RRP - for cheaper than the RRP advertised you would be able to get a pretty good branded unit from a high street store! While someone might for convenience pay the deal price (which is still higher than via many deals on ebay or dx) anyone who paid the stated RRP would be paying perhaps 4-5x what the unitmight sell for if at a 'good price'.

The deal also says allow 21 days for delivery - I bought a much superior 7" unit with more maps on ebay for NZD$105.77 shipped on 27th December 2011 and despite the New Year Holiday Break it arrived on or before 6th January 2012.

The other interesting thing about many of the Daily deal sites is that some appear to have merged/been taken over. From memory I think dailydo and yazoom may now be the same company but in recent times I have noticed duplication of deals on other sites. I see that the Groupy deal today also appears on the Yazoom site so perhaps Yellow have now bought dailydo+yazoom - I don't know.

For cheaper than that RRP you get a decent TomTom, not a second rate Chinese POS.

Or the TomTom app on the iPhone, which is excellent I might add, other than that it currently appears to be restricted to one country's (e.g. NZ) maps only.

Only two NZ ones are actually more expensive. But that's not the case. The real thing is that if you compare the price on Groupy with the cheaper TomTom you can find, the "savings" are not significant when you factor you product quality, maps updates from AA, etc.

Obviously there are always people who will buy cheap - like those who buy Chinese iFone then complain apps don't work...

There was a sunglass deal on Groupy last year (http://www.groupy.co.nz/national/2555/$1-for-chris-cross-classic-black-designer-sunglasses-solid-lens-or-gradient-len) with glasses sold for $1 valued at $348. This appeared in NZ around the same time Facebook groups and forums in Aussie were being flooed with complains about the same company and product that was sold for $1.

When you can buy the glasses on eBay for ~$7 the $348 is clearly nowhere near the true value of the product.

Funny how its the most expensive one (by far) that is sold here: http://www.pickrice.com/Portable-GPS-C1122 which is listed as the supplier by groupy.

And since it is clearly a dropship whats the deal with the inevitable warranty issues etc? GST etc? How can I be sure I would get a GST reciept when ordering from groupy etc?

Its almost like they have just loaded that one onto the pickrice site to make the deal look legit, and what the hell sort of name for a place is pickrice?!

Yeah I got TomTom on my iPhone 4S for around $80 and bought a window mount for $30 plus car charger and gotta say that I'm really impressed. Probably the best App on my iPhone...

+1

GLONASS + GPS support for great justice! (Also faster lock on and better precision).

And if you are the penny pinching type, the free NavFree app may be worth considering. I have that on my iPhone and an entry level Navman unit which predates my iPhone. While NavFree isn't quite as good as the Navman (in particular it doesn't state street names when announcing directions), it is certainly good enough.
